Presumption? Nika's post in the thread I linked to implied at least one Dandy character, and we have confirmation that two strips from BeanoMAX will end up in the weekly sometime in the next month - the anniversary issue happens to be exactly four weeks after the last issue of BeanoMAX.

Here's what happened on July 24th 110 years ago:

Seeing the the 1902 Jester and Wonder on the "What comics did you buy today?" thread I decided to have a look at my 1903 bound volume of the same and came across this advert.

So The Boys Herald has the same birthday week as the Beano, only it was 35 years earlier. They never had aniversary issues out together though, as this version of The Boys Herald folded in 1913.

^Is that a reference to Striker? The football strip from the Sun that ended up there briefly?
Re: The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing tim
...more an oblique reference to the weird shelving policies of some clueless retailers Digi!
Re: The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing tim
Well, I figured it was some sort of joke anyway.

And 65 years ago:

Re: The Beano 75 years issue whats inside...its guessing tim
I remember those ice cream sellers, Steve. Definitely part of my nostalgia. In fact, a year or so back I saw a clockwork one in an antiques centre, and as it still works, I couldn't resist it. I'd have photographed it if my camera hadn't needed charging, so we'll have to make do with this rubbish scan. Needless to say, the lid couldn't lie down!

Biffo was smaller in those early issues I see. He looks like a kid, rather than the adult version who was soon to be established.

off topic but speaking of ice cream as I mentioned elsewhere Status Quo were on the Danny Baker show last Saturday and Francis Rossi's family were ice cream sellers - I remember their shop in Deptford High Steet in the 1960s.
It wasn't just Biffo that was smaller - that issue of the Beano is a reduced sized one due to paper rationing even long after the war. (Not fewer pages but narrower in size).

^Actually, "Not fewer pages" is wrong, considering that a few issues had 10 pages, the standard then was 12, and before the war the page count had been 28.
