Those audio recordings are all that survives of some old Doctor Who episodes, now!

Anyway, I was recently reminded of a series I used to like called The Champions, it was a bit like The Man From UNCLE, but with three characters who all had 'superpowers', to some degree. All I could remember of it for years was the fact their HQ had a big fountain outside.

The Champions has been repeated several times on itv4 in recent years Mike, and like most of those ITC adventure shows is available on DVD:

A Champions comic strip ran in Joe 90 Top Secret in the sixties.

On the subject of audio cassettes this has been sitting by me for a few months now. I will probably put it on ebay.

I caught the last hour of the film Birth of the Beatles on True Entertainment tonight. Saw it many years ago. I prefer it to the later Backbeat which was the same story.

I can remember taping some Pop off the telly on cassette - a 1979 compilation of Pop performances on Swap Shop.

Quite a few people have audio taped old editions of Top Of The Pops & that's all that survives of most 60s/earlly 70s editions.

I can remember one kid audioed his winning story being read by Kenneth Williams on Jackanory - that's all that survives of that edition.

I recently saw on You Tube somebody's film via film camera off the telly of an edition of The Val Doonican Show from the early 70s, when VD (oo-er!) was on ITV with ATV. It was recorded in black & white (show was originally in colour). A intersting cuiro to say the least.

A few years back, I acquired The Singing, Ringing Tree and Robinson Crusoe on DVD. Another couple of slices of my childhood retrieved from the mists of time.

I'd love to see "ZOKKO" again!

Been reading about Singing Ringling Tree on net - yes I remember. Will have to hunt DVD when I can afford it.

Was recently seeing the intro & enjoying theme tune of Euro TV show The Flashing Blade on You tube at library. Wicked!

Three Euro tales that I've not seen since TV screening but would love to see again esp on DVD:

The Boy From 5B - about a boy called Boris who is handed responsibility of a class of younger kids. It impacts on his personal life & perusal of a girl in his class - but he soon discovers who his friends really are.

Hang On Doggy! - Yogoslav tale (narrated in Uk by Keith Barron) about a boy called Matic who moves to area where he has run ins with local rough kids, but gets a dog called Jakob for starring in a film - but faces a battle to keep him (ending is very sad!)

The Boy From Lapland - Had haunting theme tune. Can remmemer this on school hols - followed Lippy Lion cartoon ( forgotten Hanna Barbara cartoon).

Everybody loves Noggin the Nog and Bagpuss, but does anyone else remember Oliver Postgate's Cyrus the Seahorse?

I've never heard of that one. I met Oliver Postgate once. It's very odd having the voice of your childhood coming out of an actual person. I also got to hold the actual, real Bagpuss briefly. It was a wrench to give him back.

I met him when he was doing a lecture tour and I know just what you mean about 'the voice of your childhood'. Even more amazing was hearing him launch effortlessly into the snide tones of Nogbad the Bad when I asked him where he got that voice from. A lovely man!

I half heard Nicky Campbell mention some episodes of Doctor Who being founf on Five Live this morning - this is from the Daily Mirror website:

A group of dedicated Doctor Who fans tracked down at least 100 long-lost episodes of the show gathering dust more than 3,000 miles away in Ethiopia.

It was feared the BBC ­programmes from the 1960s – featuring the first two doctors William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton – had vanished for all time after the Beeb flogged off a load of old footage.

But after months of ­detective work the tapes have been unearthed at the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency.

The rumour has been around for months, but the BBC are making an official statement at the end of the week, and will make some available to buy as digital downloads. I don't think it's as many episodes as some say, but any would be welcome of course.

It's funny how closely the BBC's relationship with Doctor Who resembles the history of most comics fans. First, a period of intense excitement; then years of embarrassment and neglect, during which all childish things are casually discarded...and finally, more years of middle-aged obsession in which reacquiring the lost treasures of one's youth seems to eclipse everything else in life!

Just heard on Five Live that one of the Christmas highlights this year will be a one off Open All Hours special with David Jason back as Granville and now the owner of the shop. Linda Baron will be back as Gladys Emanuel and she will be on Five Live breakfast tomorrow (sorry, this) morning. Roy Clark will write the episode.
