And I was given a copy of Saltire: Annihilation Part 1 as I have the happy task of reviewing it for Down The Tubes (DTT)

and about 25 Each of the Whizzer and Chips and the Best of the 1970s Girls annuals no Hotspurs Beezer or Topper though

Picked up Jag (8th June 1968) for £3 in the Barras.

Incidentally anyone in the Glasgow area that's not been to the comic stall in McIvers Market area and is looking for some really old comics (50s 60s and older Beano's, Dandy's etc etc) should talk to the guy he has 100s behind the counter- I always thought he was going to be a grumpy "so and so", so never really bought anything from him, but as don't have any Jags and wanted to revisit the comic (especially only for for £3) I thought I would pluck up the courage to talk to him - turns out he's a lovely, very helpful guy.

Slim pickings at the ephemera fair I only picked up two items but one was a Tiger Tim's Rainbow Painting Book for a tenner. It looks to be from around the 1920s and features enlarged panels from the comics - or perhaps original panels just for the painting book. Google has no sign of it so maybe quite rare. Also picked up a 1930s Humorist magazine - Christmas issue for £2.

My Sainsbury's now have a few (very few) of the 'Best of' annuals. The DC Thomson ones have 80 pages. Best of Topper mainly has 1960s/70s strips. Good stuff.

Delighted to hear Lew that the Topper best of annual has 60s and 70s strips, that's my era. I was nearly sure that it would have been late 80s. I am keeping it along with the others for Christmas day. Us British comic fans are well spoilt for choice this fall.Also we have Hibernian comics set to release two new books. Great stuff

Yes, the cover's a bit misleading in that it may give the impression it contains later strips. There are a few of those but it seems to be at least half 60s/70s strips. Reproduction is excellent.

The Hotspur one looks very nice too. Not sure of the era of the strips though.

They didn't have the Beezer or Bunty books, unless they sold out over the last few days, which is possible as they've definitely under ordered on these items. I had the last Topper one.

Yes the cover has a very late 80s-early 90s look about it which I guess made me think that era would make up the majority if the contents. Always very different to tell the year of Hotspur strips the DCT adventure comics always look very dated even at the time they were published. Glad to hear the reproduction is of a high standard, thank you Lew for the additional info. Who would have thought that we should these annuals again bsck on the shelves.



British comic fans looking for a fun read should look out for the a
Andy Capp year book which is being promoted in the customer service of Argos and in the Sainsburys book section. Again excellent value and a 100% british strip

I vaguely remember seeing that particular strip of The Whizzers of Oz in an annual so may by the Best of The Topper Annual so that I can re-read it.

The Battle Annual is a good one though based on strips from the comic rather than the annuals. A good one to review when you have the time.

I'd review it if it was available around here. However, the more I hear about it the more it sounds like a re-issue or cut down version of this book that Titan published five years ago:

Bought the New Dandy Annual and the New Oor Wullie Annual for just over £2. I had a £5 voucher for Smiths, they are doing a buy 1 get one for £1 offer and I had a 20% discount card!

Just managed to get both the best of Topper & Beezer Annuals from the Sainsbury's in Kempston Beds
But more importantly found out the Sainsbury's reference numbers for these books
The Best Of Topper is :7721909 and The Best of Beezer is :7721904 if you ring up your local Sainsbury's and ask them to enter this number into their system they can tell you what stores in your area have the books in stock .
