Similar to "Pheonix.." I ve been really disapointed to find another artist filing in for the regualr one. When I was buying up all the old Whams, Pows and SMASH' I could find a few years ago for the Ken Reid (and Leo Baxendale strips) I came across a few versions of Dare a Day Davey, FrankieStein and The Nerves that weren't drawn by Reid during his run of htese strips - all were really ppor verson (obviously fill in at late notice) but considering Ried excelllent run onthese strips it was amajor pain - Leo of course was ghosted all the time some of them poorly (IMHO) - A particular disapointment of a regualr fav artist of mine was in Neal Adams' version of THor a bit starnge as it was brilliant but I expected it to be more lol (never satisfied)

Picked up this today near mint £3, I seem to be picking up a annual a week at the momment.

I went to the London Postcard and Collector's fair at Bloomsbury yesterday. Picked up a lot of non comic stuff like 19th century copies of Punch, Boys of Our Empire, Forget me Not. Also got 32 copies of Playhour & TV Toyland for £14. All from 1967. Ken Graham had some nice very early Hotspurs (pre number 50 issues) in very good condition for £8 each. Also dome Rovers, Surprises and Rangers from the 1930s. He has a lot of Boys papers and some 40s Beanos and Dandys. If you type Kens Paper Collectables into google it will take you to his website/shop. He's a very affable bloke. He has hundreds of magazines and comics.

Very good shop that Kens Paper Collectables, I've been in there a couple of times browsing around for an hour or so, when I've been visiting a friend.

Went today to the 30th Century shop in London..
spent £25...
Got 3 1965 Dandys now can read the Stinging Swarm..
Got some early Whoopee's..number 11..17..25
Also some early Beezers 1962.3 of them.and at last see my first SpaceWhacker
Its nice seeing the early Numbskulls..also Mutt and Jeff from America
Cireros cat was strange..
nice seeing Baby Crockett on the cover...and wonderful Banana Bunch by Leo..
Wished I'd bought more Beezers now they are so good..

Not a bad purchase for £25 Peter. What sort of condition are they in?

(And Monday was the perfect day for you to buy Sixties Dandys and Beezers, as that's the day they came out way back when. They always cheered up the start of the school week. )

They were fair..
£2.25 each..this is about the price I paid..
The Dandy pages were a bit (not badly)crumpled..maybe water damage...doesn't bother me as long as it has all the pages..
The Beezer looked great to me..again £2.25
I also bought some 1990 Whizzer and chips (£1.50 each) and one 1976 Dandy..a 1985 Buster in the £25 price..

The Dandys Beezers and whoopee's I'm very pleased with.

Comic shops in London! La! La! La! I really didn't want to hear that...much! Looking forward to being in the Big Smoke from next month and I can see that I'll be having tube-trips aplenty.

On the comic front, I bought another 10 Victors in the 300s range to fill in a few more gaps leaving me with only 50 or so to go of the weekly. Also I have bought and I am waiting for a copy of Comics Journal 28 which seems to be rather Victor-centric, but I am more in mind that the scans I have seen all featured Harry Farrugia's work.

Ken's paper palace of joy is not actually in London, though.

It is, however, about the same distance from me as Peterburough, and i'm not doing anything else this weekend

Then again a shop just the other side of Peterburough say they have a really good Sexton Blake Library on thier website, so i might go up there. Not that i can actually afford anything!

Hi Col, Comic Journal No 28 is only 'Victor-centric' in that it contains the article I wrote on the work of Harry Farrugia (11 pages + 6 page index). The rest of the issue is made up of......... Oh I'll not spoil it for you!

I remember that Autumn 1994 issue very well. I was on the Editorial Board at the time as a Technical Adviser, along with Steve Holland. His brief was to correct any contributors' errors of fact relating to comic matters, mine was to do the same with articles on D.C. Thomson story papers and to correct all grammatical errors and spelling mistakes in every submitted item, including the Editorial. You just wouldn't believe how much red pen was required. Issue 28 was the first number into which Bryon Whitworth placed colour pages, 4 in all. It was also the last of the A5 issues. Issue 29, for Spring 1995, was notable for being A4 size and for having a colour cover for the first time, front and rear. Very impressive. Oh, I nearly forgot!! As well as an excellent article by Ray Moore called Fade To Black - The Final Years Of Film Fun,it contained a cogent analysis of Martin Trouse's The Wizard Index (1944-1963) by Derek Marsden.

Either way, I am still looking forward to getting the journal. I must admit to having a soft spot for Harry Farrugia's work as it was always so detailed and it had that realistic effect, but never descended into what I would call 'messy'.

As to the Wizard Index, does it bear any similarity to something that you are considering Phoenix?

No. Actually the words cheese and chalk come to mind, but not necessarily in that order.

Today I have acquired Nosey Parker's Holiday Comic, which was a free gift pullout in issue 846 of The Rover (Jul. 2 1938). This item rarely surfaces in any condition so I'm absolutely delighted to get this Near Mint copy, and only slightly distressed at having had to pay £50 for it.
