I can, Steve. It was given with the issue for 30 September 1961. They had given a Sports Star Spotter the previous week. It would be the best part of 18 months before the next free gift.

The probable reason why Rover and Adventure wasn't numbered is that they closed at the same time, but not with the same issue number, as Adventure had been running for just under six months when Thomsons launched The Rover. Thomsons probably couldn't make up their mind about numbering, and they certainly seemed to consider Adventure the weaker title because the word Adventure was to disappear from the masthead in October 1963. A similar situation occurred on 11 May 1991 when Judy and Mandy were closed down, Judy being the senior by 7 years, but with a different outcome. The company then took the decision to amalgamate them as equals, calling the new paper Mandy and Judy, or M&J as it became known, with an issue number from 1 and a date. It was to continue in that form for 6 years, at which point it was annexed by Bunty.

I await the book, Phoenix, when you will extrapolate further on these matters... still niggling for that Victor book... bounder.

Work on both books is ongoing, Geoff, but as they say, patience is a virtue. As far as The Victor is concerned, Ray is busy preparing the information for sections on the completes, all repeats of the serials, the cartoons, the free gifts, and the annuals. My role is to write all the summaries of the serials, which I will be starting on either when Ray tells me he is roughly halfway through his preparation work or when I have completed my research work on the ten titles for girls. I am currently reading and taking notes on quite a lot of novels and story papers written for girls before the launch of Bunty in 1958 in an attempt to assess the extent of their influence on the writers of the serials in that paper, and obviously on Judy as well. It may turn out to be a waste of time but I doubt it.

Cycled into town and found nothing and decided to ride a couple of miles further to two charity shops that specailize in books .I tend to visit these about 3 times a year.Spent £5.20p on these.------

NUTTY No2
NUTTY No13
VICTOR No720
VICTOR No723 christmas
VICTOR No872
KRAZY June25 1977
Charlton BEETLE BAILEY 1973 not a fan but bought it for rarity value
PC a conrad THRILOGY ( three tales of course)
DC silver age classics THE FLASH
Marvel CONAN classic

As usual with the US comics had to search through the boxes for complete stories not the continuation ones.
Did my usual routine of selecting a load of comics and then putting a number back to come down to a price I wanted to pay.

It won't be a waste of time, Phoenix, because you already have one person awaiting for the end result. I have wrote fiction in the past and one story brought one person a lot of joy... it kind of surprised me at the time but, still, knowing that I had at least entertained one person via my dubious scribbling... I was lifted with a strange glow.

Went to the ephemera fair at The Holiday Inn in Bloomsbury on Sunday and I went across to the Royal National where there was a book fair. Spent £266 on the following:

The Popular 290, 316, 296, 312 and 302 all from 1924/25
The Beano 1062, 1017, 1032, 1018 all from 1962, 1091 from 1963 and 924 from 1960. And 1345 from 1968.
The Dandy 1102, 1108, 1119, 1125 all from 1963 1160, 1161, 1164, 1177, 1178, 1181, 1192, 1194, 1195, 1201, 1203, 1204 all from 1964, 1220 from 1965, 1375 and 1379 from 1968, 1455 from 1969 and 1474 from 1970.
The Thriller 397 dated 13.10.1934
The Wizard 1453 dated 19.12.1953 Christmas issue
Hurricane 29.8.64
The Wizard number 1 dated 14.2.1970
TV Comic 411 from 1959, 620 from 1963 and 673 from 1964.
The Hotspur 565 15.2.1947, 559 21.12.1946 Christmas issue.
The Champion 772 and 774 from 1936 both with free gift booklets.
The Lion 31.10.1959 with free gift football team photos.
Princess 21.3 and 30.5.1964
Soccer Star 7 and 14 December 1963. (two issues)
Answers Magazine 158 dated 6.6.1891, 170 dated 29.8.1891 and 171 5.9.1891.
Pick Me Up Magazine 553 and 557 from 1899 and 605 and 607 from 1900.
The Topper 838 dated 22.2.1969
The Daily Mirror dated 30.9.1915
Pow! number 4 dated 11.2.67 (has a two page advert for Fantastic no. 1)
Smash! 54 dated 11.2.67 (Has a one page advert for Fantastic no. 1)
Top Spot 8 dated 13.12.1958, 23 dated 28.3.1959 and 24 dated 4.4.1959.
Scraps 856 dated 6.1.1900.
London Opinion Christmas number from 1937, Seaside Holiday number from 1934 and Christmas Number from 1935. These have scores of Cartoons inside.
Titbits Summer Special from 1965.

I already have the Pow but this copy was in superb condition (as was the Smash!) and probably better than the one I have. The price works out at about £4 an item. Not a bad haul.

I didn't want to start a new thread (What jigsaw puzzles did you buy today?) but I was looking to put a Jigsaw puzzle on ebay and came across this nice item. I'm tempted to bid on it myself as I love the Daleks. It finishes at 10.15am tomorrow.

Look under: Ravensburger 1,000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle, Titled "Doctor Who".

At a local car boot sale and when I went in, I thought to myself that I could smell comics. However, until I came to the penultimate seller, I thought I had misled myself. It was a barren sale as far as I was concerned until I saw three books on that seller's table. One I left as News of The World Football annuals are not my thing. The other two are not my usual fare, but when I saw two things, I just had to pick them up.

One thing was that the art for the Range Rider annual had been done by Leo Rawlings. And I am a sucker for any connection with D C Thomson comics. And the other thing was, well, I will let the pictures speak for me...

I used to watch The Range Rider when I got home from school along with the Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok. Been looking for Range Rider dvds but no full series available. Jock Mahoney and Guy Madison were the stars but I can never remember who played who. I know Andy Devine played Jingles who was Wild Bill'd sidekick and Dick West was The Range Rider's sidekick.

I think Mike Noble drew the Range Rider in TV Comic for a while, following on from the full-colour Lone Ranger strip he produced for TV Express. The TV schedules were awash with Westerns in those days but oddly enough I don't ever remember seeing the Range Rider...maybe it was one of those shows that was never broadcast in the ATV region?

Yesterday I picked up a nice cover illustration for Princess Picture Library no.91, painted (I think) by the marvellous Robert MacGillivray. (Though oddly enough I do have that issue and the printed cover was quite different, suggesting that this version must have been rejected for some reason)
