I would have probably bought them had I seen them but I don't look for comics much on ebay now just the rare free gifts and flyers. I have hundreds of Jokers though so may well already have them. I have many comics from that era that are in almost new condition which is surprising and they are not disbound copies either.

To understand Phil's dialect remark I'll have to dig out my Likely Lads box set, though but.

I finally secured Roy of the Rover's free gift no. 1 - football wallchart. I always pipped in past auctions which varied between £30-£40. Then, a few month ago, it really inflated and baffled me to no end - for two auctions, it exceeded £80. I shook my head and thought: that is not a true value and certainly a product of overzealous or too determined bidders. Sure enough, the next one I bid on, and again pipped, went for £38. Still, I persevered: steadfastly refusing to bid more than £38. This time, I entered a highest bid of £35 and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had won at £23.50. Never knock patience when you're a collector. Sorry to be so smug but, I am!

Sorry, Phil just spotted the Potteries bit on your reply. My first Millwall away game was against Stoke City around 1978? I remember all the Millwall fans were inside a police cordon but I was on my own in the road - suddenly hoards or red and white scarf wearing Stoke fans in flared jeans came charging toward us. Being a Millwall supporter I knew I couldn't run but I didn't half walk fast. Luckily my fellow Millwall fans broke through the corden and the Stoke fans turned and fled.

Nice cheap day, fairly lots of stuff... Got the 1974 Sparky annual from a charity shop for £1, and they're currently giving away digital versions of the first four issues of Dirty Bites (modern US underground thing) for free, so they're getting downloaded now

In spending mood today £8 for that little lot

Doctor Who Comic #5 from WHS in Falkirk. Is that a bit earlier than usual? While on holiday in Italy, I bought current issues of Dylan Dog; Martin Mystere; Diabolik - Grande, Inedito, Ristampa and various older issues; Battaglia #2; a reprint of the Magnus illustrated Agent SS018 and very nice it is too. Also a selection of Italian reprints of French comics incl. Scotland Yard, which is a bit dark. I also bought this week, the latest digital issues of Archie Afterlife and recent issues of Bandette - highly entertaining and great fun. That last lot from Comixology.

Just ordered a sizable chunk of HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE in my quest to broden my reading horizons......no, it has nothing to do with the notorious headbanging music also dubbed with the same title.

----now, I have to come clean and admit I have never actually looked through an edition of this mag, all I know are the famous sexist-fantasy covers , however I have known of the existance of this publication since the late 70s.


Whether it is worthy fantasy or pretentious tosh, I should find out soon----will report my findings on here if this mag is worth pursuing or not.

I got the latest issue of the new Groo series by Evanier & Aragones yesterday - one of the few current American titles I still try to keep up with. Given the undeniable quality it amazes me how hard it's becoming to find this comic, whereas most Forbidden Planet branches carry multiple copies of almost everything else!

My teenage self was intrigued by it a fair few times, and each time it was disappointing gibberish. Nicely drawn but not a lot else. Tracked down an old issue on eBay for the Harvey Kurtzman story, that was worth it, but that's about it! Saying that, I enjoyed the film that was made. 1987 or sometime?

Meanwhile, I had no idea they were still doing Groo comics - love those things! Got a stack of around 30 of the things for £5 on a day out in Chester last year

thanks, twoheadedboy-----all I have seen are some isolated images from HEAVY METAL that also intruiged me: even if just for the visuals, I will give this one a chance...the covers are often masterfully done, if a bit dodgy and exploitative.


Great to be able to catch up with all this material all this time later, for all that.

It's out four-weekly, not monthly. 13 issues a year. It's been four weeks since issue 4, so no, not early.

Nice one, judomole, as regards your beano haul of 1977. It cost me around £25 and plus postage. And then, I managed to claw the beano free gift issue with the skimmer that cost me £35 or so that far eclipsed the sale of the whole year's issues (go figure!) I'm roughly half way through reading the issues and am pleasantly surprised. Against the "modern" Beano, it rocks and easily outweighs everything as regards art and content that the present has to offer! But then, i'm a dinosaur. And, dinosaurs wouldn't buy the Dandy, would they?
