How surprising to be corrected by Digi. Anyone here who hasn't been?

Can't think of anybody offhand.
Digifiend wrote:Actually, "Not fewer pages" is wrong, considering that a few issues had 10 pages, the standard then was 12, and before the war the page count had been 28.
Digi's reaction is due to his having misunderstood Steve's point. Steve wasn't denying that there were reductions to the page count of The Beano at that time, in fact he wasn't even concerning himself with that issue. He was simply clarifying that he was specifically, and only, referring to its width.

It makes me wonder how long the DC Thomson titles went "narrow". I seem to recall it was only for a couple of years (but I may be corrected). And 1948 seems a long time after the war to still be rationing stuff? I have some narrow boys papers as well. I don't remember AP titles being affected this way though.

Thanks for the defence Phoenix - look forward to seeing you in September. My favourite time of year as I hate the summer.

They hadn't even resumed weekly publication yet in '48. That happened in 1949. And some items remained rationed well into the 1950s!

I think a company's wartime paper allowance was a proportion of what they were getting pre-war. As Thomsons made the decision to hang on to almost all of their titles, they had to reduce their page count. The Amalgamated Press, on the other hand, closed down or amalgamated a whole raft of their titles (Sparkler, Happy Days, Modern Boy, Sports Budget, Gem, Thriller, Magnet, Boys Friend Library, Girls Friend Library, Schoolgirl, Tiger Tim's Weekly, Triumph etc.) so they could be more expansive. Adventure, The Wizard, The Rover and The Hotspur came out every fortnight from September 1941, two one week, two the next, but The Amalgamated Press's The Champion appeared almost every week. Even after the war, from November/December 1946 Thomsons' four titles could only move to a three-weeks-in-every-four production, staggered so that every week three of them appeared. This state of affairs continued until March/April 1949 when weekly production was restored.

As far as the narrowness was concerned, Adventure and The Rover were narrow from birth until September 10th 1949, at which point they became the same width as The Wizard and The Hotspur, both of which had been that width from their birth.

Is this the 75th anniversary issue then? Has it been seen before?

Maybe it'll be the last ever Dandy Summer Special in the same way that Friday the 13th Part 4 was The Final Chapter.

Next year's might be the Dandy *Holiday* Special!

Of course, the fact that that summer special exists means that the final weekly issue was not the last ever print Dandy after all. I hope it sells well enough to make a fib out of it's title.

If they're available now, I would like to get both titles. I'll pay the cost of both items including shipping to Australia via PayPal.

If you can help me out, then PM me.

Summer specials have always been different beasts to weekly titles. I thought everyone knew that.
I hope it sells well enough to make a fib out of it's title.
Could you explain, in detail, what you mean by this comment? And explain clearly and concisely so that there's no chance of misinterpretation.
