...Not to mention the traces of Ken Reid that can still be seen in that issue's episode of Roger the Dodger.

SPENCER/ PETRIE/ Mc GRATH: [page three] in that order---they all started out as Baxendale-alikes in the mid-60s.

Great stuff, Phil!

this page; ROBERT NIXON, before he found his own footing.

I missed off a couple of covers from my previous post. One is a New Year cover so not too late:

I recognized the young Bob Monkhouse as well as Arthur Askey as purely visual imagery before checking the lettering-------muchos thanks for enhancing the thread, Steve!

If you mean Roger the Dodger page, it is definitely not Bob Nixon. I don't know the artist's name but he ghosted Ken Reid on a number of Faceache sets in Buster in the seventies.

I've looked at the Roger again, klakadak, and the only other artist who rings a bell to me at least would be Frank Mc Diarmid, but for me this looks more Nixon-esque than Diarmid-esque .

However if anyone else reading this knows better, I'm all ears......

EDIT: some of you must have the lavish HISTORY of the BEANO book [2008]

On page 192 there is a dedication to Robert Nixon, focusing on his early output for the comic, replete with accompanying 1965 ROGER artwork, which is embryonic and unlike his later more recognizable material----it's the same artist responsible in both cases, I'm pretty sure.

It's not all that often I go to the extreme of digging out reference books, preferring 'gut instinct' which usually 'tells the truth' in a nano-second, but in this case I did.

But feel free to disagree--if yer can back it up!
