Interesting back cover, that, as I hadn't realised that T&P had reprinted The Spider pulps. I knew, and actually have a few, that there were British reprints of The Phantom Detective, another long running American pulp. As you say, not comics. But some of them have really good, atmospheric illustrations accompanying the almost non - stop action. Some of these pulps go like the clappers. You find the same breathless action often in the British crime paper, The Thriller, and in that the illos are excellent.

Sometimes that pulp-like breathless action in The Thriller was because that's where the stories came from, with The Shadow being a regular feature there in the late thirties.

Oh yes indeed. But The Shadow stories were a relatively small part of The Thriller. Individual thrillers plus series such as The Saint; Mr. J.G. Reeder; Mr. Preed; Blackshirt etc. were the vast majority of content and they were all British. I can't recommend strongly enough the J.G. Reeder stories by Edgar Wallace. The Shadow is pretty good too

Kind of like Hamlet then? If you don't count Fortinbras who's just passing by I think Horatio is the only one left alive by the end of the play. They really don't write 'em like that any more!

Well, I got given one Commando from Catriona Laird and Norrie Miller and I bought another pre-decimal one from Fusion Comics. I then get home from Kingdom Con to find a box of swaps has arrived to put me over the 3,200 mark. Yay!

At today's carboot some chap had beat me to a bunch of comics and I watched as he picked out all the best ones and hoping that he would leave something worth buying for me but no such luck.
Moving on to another stall I managed to pick up this item for a £1, I hadn't heard of this recently printed book before but I expect it is familiar to forum members.

Nope, I Haven't seen the book before, so you're not alone. But what a great cover. Jack Davis was a bit of a genius, working for EC and, of course, Mad.
Also, 2 early Quality comics, Military Comics and Blackhawk. Need a bit of help here. Is that a Chuck Cuidera cover? And is the part of a page beside the Military cover by Jack Cole, 'cos it looks like it. That last panel on The Victor back page is rather good.

According to the Grand Comics Database the Military cover is by Will Eisner and the Blackhawk cover is by Al Bryant.

Well done on spotting Jack Cole's art. I know he drew Death Patrol in Military Comics, so I looked at a copy of the first issue at Comic Book Plus and there's the same page.

Well what can I say?
Jack Cole you're correct on that and BLACKHAWK created by Will Eisner was also drawn by Chuck Cuidera in the early editions therefore I would think you are correct although the cover artist is not mentioned in this book.

The foreword in this (2009) book is by GARTH ENNIS and this book as a number of articles on UK comics such as BATTLE, Warlord, etc.

Had I just looked on CB+, I'd have found out those artists for myself. Even worse, I was signed into CB+ when I posted that i.d.
Pills, is it? I need a bit more than pills.

By the way, many Blackhawk stories were drawn by Reed Crandall, and I have to say, they are rather tasty to look at. Give them a go.

Nice Crandall art plus some by Paul Gustavson, he of Human Bomb fame. Although you should be warned that the Chop Chop story is of it's time and not pc.

And just back from Moniaive where I picked up a few nice things. A sealed Battle postcard set (It's not sealed anymore. ), The New Statesmen 1 to 5, The Boys Volume 3 and issue 5 of Electric Soup to go with some rather nice artwork someone gave me a couple of years ago!

I think Will Eisner and Chuck Cuidera were in dispute with each other for years over who actually created Blackhawk, but they finally decided that life's too short (and memories are too unreliable) as a result of which they agreed to share the credit!
