I'll have a look through it in the shop, but from what you're describing there the 75th birthday Beano may well be my last ever Beano :(
I wonder if there are similar discussions on TV forums with adults saying they won't watch CiTV because it no longer appeals to them, or how John Noakes should still be presenting Blue Peter?

Those 'Talkies' will never catch on as far as I'm concerned.

I'm surprised you didn't quite get the Numskulls this week Peter. You're in it. Can you guess which character you are? :)

To be fair, Will I. Am has taken the phrase 'dope' into new territory, so it means 'cool' now. Just like 'wicked' or 'sick'. So for children today, their first exposure to the word will be in that context.

:) You're the star. The one saying "What on Earth are you Numskulls talking about!?!"

The first draft of the story was wall to wall hip phrases. But it was incomprehensible. It need a "normal" person in the middle pointing out that everyone was talking non-sense.

And Lew's right about the meaning of these words changing every five minutes. The other day I said to my son "How do you feel?" He said sick. What? like sick as in cool or sick as in ill? He said I was a dope.

(The meaning of ill has been a bit wooly since the Beastly boys brought out license to ill"

How ironic I'm acting just like him in the Numbskulls
What is dope? Is that drugs?

I remember a teacher taking us to task for using the word 'great' in the sixties, saying it diminished its meaning if used for the enjoyment of trivial things.

Got this week's copy. Again you can see The Dandy Influence. Did anyone notice the mini strip "I Pity the School" featuring Mr T which was originally in The Dandy?

Turns out people have been saying "sick" for longer than I thought, too! I was watching a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon from the 1950s a couple of days ago, and a "hip" rooster kept describing things as "sick".

Meanwhile, had a look through this week's Beano today, and I'm standing by what I said before. It's been a fun 20 years but that'll do for me for now, thanks.

Beano look's absolutely awful this week & it is very Dandy like now, i know change is necessary but i fear beano will soon end up like the dandy as in no more so 2000ad will be the only remaining traditional comic for me,i don't count commando in that category though. And Bananaman is back to an awful art style, apologies if the artist is a member here but the art is not suited to the Bananaman i have loved since iss 1 of nutty & i never read any of the reprints they have been doing lately. And is 2.50 gonna be the normal price now school hols?
