Its also interesting to compare this as the UK's version of Action Comics #1, its about the same age, it's the respective countries most recognisable comic, and is still being published.

But the market for both is hugely different - both in the size of the collector community and the perceived value to how 'non' collectors value them.

So whereas today the Beano is worth say £20k in vfn condition, Action #1 is over £3m...

But then... the best known copy of Action was last sold in the early 80's to Dave Anderson for about the same price as the starting price for the Beano today.

Are we due for an overhaul of values of the very high end just as happened in the USA? Who wants to look back in 20 years thinking... gosh i'm glad I bought that Beano for £25k in 2018 - its worth more then £3 million now!

I was thinking about the deductions if it did sell. A private seller would have taken advantage of the recent ebay offer of 'pay no more than £3 on your sales'. Wheras Phils auctions would attract a deduction of £2500, not to mention his deduction for selling it. About a £5000 difference to the cash going into your pocket.

There's a cutoff point on eBay where the maximum you pay is £200 whatever the final sale price no matter if its a special offer or not.

But yeah I must admit I'd have just listed it myself on an offer day - you get them at least every month now.

As to Phil's cut for listing it? I'd assume the owner would have negotiated a much smaller percentage than usual? I know he gets high bids but not multiple thousands difference.

I think it'll sell immediately at £20k BIN no matter who listed it (I think there's a couple on here who would definitely pull the trigger at that price) - so it'd make no sense to not list it yourself rather than have Phil list it at his usual commission.

Would you give 20000 to a new seller with no, maybe even negative, feedback? Might be the case.

I'd arrange to pick up and pay in the lobby of a local bank with cash or with Paypal on my phone.

Done it before.

I think they are too over priced. Yes, there are some good Number Ones with free gifts but even so.

Regarding Beano Number 1, I could see someone buying just for long term investment. It depends on how the first issue has increased in value over the year.

A good ploy trying to sell on Beano's 80th birthday. I wish them luck.

With all the Beano hype at the moment, perhaps it's the right time for me to sell my complete collection of The Beano from the first issue of 1970 until the last newsprint one in 1988 (alongside with The Dandy from the same period), all packaged in hard-cover bound volumes - two per year, with cover reproductions on front and back, wrapped in bright dustjackets, in excellent condition and many of the free gifts and pink flyers intact?

Your bound volumes look absolutely beautiful Irmantas and you should be rightly proud of them but, for me, I have to say that I prefer comics in their 'natural' state. I have some bound volumes in my collection but they were bought to complete runs rather than for the love of the bound volumes themselves.

I've always felt the same way about my comics Kashgar - both British and American, but I must admit that the last ten years or so have made me reconsider, with most American comics now resembling the monthly installments of Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, etc., which preceded the first editions but are considered to be much less collectable. For some reason young people now seem to think of comics only in terms of Graphic Novels and everything is geared towards stories that can be packaged in that way.

Of course, there's still the Beano...!

My older Beanos and Dandys, as well as the whole run of Sparky are in their "natural" state, as is all of my Odhams and Fleetway/IPC collection, and I have no intention of having them bound because, just as you, I prefer them in their original form. As for those bound volumes - I had them made so that my DCT comics collection from 1970 onwards is better organised, and bound volumes surely offer this advantage.
