Although pricing old comics is based on guess work you can instinctively know when a price is too high even when the comics are 30/40 years old.To me '80s Dandy's and 2000AD are not rare and I have seen them recently at 50p each and still haven't bought them unless for 50p they included the free gift .
I went into an antique shop on holiday last year on the I.O.W.
Having seen how they negotiate prices on antique's road trip shows on TV, I managed to negotiate a couple of pounds off a book price.I mentioned to the owner that I bought lots of items from carboot sales and charity shops to which he explained that with the enormous cost he had of runñing an high street shop that they had an advantage over him.It was something I hadn't thought of .

I tend to collect examples of the various comics rather than full sets and yesterday in Oxfam they had a lot of Thunderbird comics at 99p each and since I have a few thunderbird books already I wasn't really interested in buying anymore. I noticed they had a thunderbird comic in the window and wondered why it was priced at £9.99p that is until I noticed it contained a free badge attached in the top left hand corner.They had a number of S.I.G. magazines in the window which I hadn't heard of before also with thunderbird type covers.These were priced at £4.99p each , quickly looking through I was not sure what they were about but they didn't look the type I would be interested in.

S.I.G. was a fanzine about the Gerry Anderson shows. Background info, interviews with the actors etc. "S.I.G" was a phrase used on the Captain Scarlet TV series in the sixties, meaning "Spectrum Is Green", said when a Spectrum officer agreed to an order.

Dandy #1 AND #2!

I had a good run at them in an auction in North Yorkshire but bottled it when I had to bid £3,500 not including the 20% on top. The winner won them for £3200 + 20% which in today's market isn't too bad I think. I need to forget it now or I'll beat myself up over not making just one more bid......

It'll be very interesting to see if the Dandy can keep hold of its value over the next 10-20 years.

Whilst its a great comic its always been in the shadow of the Beano.

And as its not published anymore I'd presume it'll go the way of the Magnet and the DCT boys papers...

Which was when I first started to go to marts and fairs all of those made good money, but as the collector pool dies out the value of them drops dramatically if they're not published or have relevant characters to keep interest alive.

I think we've already seen the high water mark pricewise for the Dandy.

Your comments are exactly where my thoughts were going and what stopped me bidding. I think 2000AD #1 and #2 with gifts as well as Commando #1 etc still have some way to go but I managed to buy Magnet Library #1 last week for £35 and that ran for decades.

I think you're right on Commando, all of #1-5 are very difficult in good condition.

2000AD #1 & #2 with the gifts aren't particularly rare, I know a number of dealers that bought and saved multiple copies of each to sell as time went on to collectors who will have kept them as complete with gift copies, but as there's a big following prices should stay strong.

I must admit I never saw the demand for Commando going like it has. I tended to put them in the same category as girls comics, always saleable but for little money.

Not up to speed with fully comprehending the merit of today's published comics.
Went into Forbidden Planet just to look through their four 50p boxes.
As I looked through the covers of heroes that had snarling faces and gritted teeth full of anger and villains from the dark side of hell ,I wondered what it was that was putting me off buying any.
However when I go to the charity shop and search their four £1boxes of '80s comics I always select too many I would like to buy and have to put some back.
Did get some IDW MICKEY MOUSE comics from Forbidden planet 50p box a few monthe ago and I think each had about 60 pages therefore I will still keep dropping in from time to time searching through their boxes.
At a charity shop this morning spotted a BANANAMAN ANNUAL 1986 for 10p but due to limited space at home decided to leave it for someone else.

There is a facsimile of magnet library 1 which I got for a fiver a year or so back. It looks just like the original. Can anyone confirm if there is a difference?

Found a new shop around Tollcross, Edinburgh. Virtually all US comics (with lots of weird art, plus vinyl records). However, virtually none of them had any prices. Only the very collectable and they were it's value and more. The occasional run-of-the-mill that had prices meant a non-collectable US Judge Dredd from the 80s was £3 with a standard Thor (around the 300 issue mark) at £20. I decided against asking about the normally low-priced DC Comics Presents I may have bought and walked out.

Don't know the name of it unfortunately. On Lothian Road, somewhere near the Futon Co. (there's no particular reason for me knowing this, I just glanced up).

A nice run of 44 Hurricane comics from #3 in 1964. Went for £103 which was a little more than I was happy to go to. Good luck to the winner though as they looked in great condition!
