Life is brutal,eh?However,I can't help feeling that the likes of Colonel Blink(has he been done already?),the Numbskulls or Some Mummies Do 'Ave 'Em would go down a treat today with kids(cartoons of course,none of your live-action rubbish).Of course,I am slightly biased in favour of the "other" top 3 from D.C. Thomson-i.e. The Beezer,The Topper and Sparky(never really rated Beano or Dandy),but then back then I was merely a fan and knew what I liked

The irony is that Kellys Eye became a parody of Dr Who in it’s later days and we know what a huge budget THAT had in it’s original run. Unfortunately there’s neither the budget or audience available these days to make an adaptation. Shame as personally I’d like to see a Tough of the Track show tied into the Olympics (I can hear Jamie Oliver whinging on about him training on fish and chips already)

Shame that Doctor Who doesn't have a character that time travels and can never die, no matter how much is thrown at him. Mind you, they'd probably have to make him all handsome, gay and American...

Not if they'd just taken the basics of the character (hero becomes invincible when wearing the Eye of Zoltec) and had him fight crooks. No need to do a literal adaptation of the stories or use the time travel element that later developed. It'd still be an exciting adventure show and would have promoted the comic, - and the greater scope of the strip would have been the incentive for the viewers to buy Valiant.

They could have done that but they'd have lost the essence of the strip. I think Kelly's Eye was all about being hurled into pits of molten lava or being trapped on runaway chariots and the like, partly because, by the nature of the strip, it was about Kelly constantly facing death - and the exotic, outlandish nature of those dangers took it far enough away from reality to be suitable for kids. If he was fighting regular crooks he'd be risking death from what - guns, knives, cudgels? All too adult for a children's series, unlike the epic, outlandish, unrealistic potential deaths of the strip.

I think the time clock clearly *was* influenced strongly by Doctor Who, but the original low budget Doctor Who series didn't have the epic feel of the present day one. It was mostly very talky, more thoughtful, mostly studio bound.

An animated series, yes - could have worked, but we didn't really make animated action series, did we? Decent animation requires a good budget too! The animated action series we showed always tended to be imported, and the ones we made ourselves geared more towards very young kids, and often with not-too-ambitious animation.

Been a good while since I've seen it but weren't there a few similarities between Lion's Spellbinder and TV's Catweazle?

Further to my previous posting. Roy of the Rovers special never made it to the shores of N.Ireland and equally annoying Egmont never even bother replying to my e mail. Makes you wonder why you would want to support the venture when they have no interest in potential customers. I was actually doing them a favour by letting them know there was a distribution problem. I will stick to digging out some of my back issues for a read.

ps From past experience DCT will always reply to any questions asked.

I sent 2 emails to DCT and got 2 replies,
1.When I asked for a replica copy of No.1 Beano free with the 'Sunday post' last year.They sent me a free copy.

2.When I thought I didn't get my subcribed 'Classics from the comics' they sent me a copy, then 2 day's latter I got another one.

Must admit that my own experience with D C Thomson has been first class. Polite and structured answers come back to my meandering queries. Even get a "Sorry, we're still trying to find the answer" reply if it takes more than a couple of days for them to find out exactly what I am looking for.

I had a look in Bristol Airport and Minehead when I was over just after Easter, but none left if they ever had them.

As for DCT - they couldn't be more helpful. I think quite a few of us are occasional/regular correspondents with at least one of the various editors.

It's sold out everywhere now I think it sold a million copies at least.
