Hi all,
Just discovered that this years dandy/beano book is called "70 Years of "Dandy" and "Beano": Our Crazy Creatures" and will be released on 5 Sept. (See
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... wnthetubes and
http://www.downthetubes.net/resources/c ... ases1.html)
I'm a little disappointed in this as I was really hoping we'd see the next in the decade series, perhaps something like "an Eighties Extravaganza", but alas it seems that DCT don't think that the eighties is a time worth remembering. Pity as that is when I grew up with the Dandy and would have loved to see a book on it!
Also, anyone know if they are still planning on releasing a 70th Anniversry Dandy only book? I know I read in an interview last year that they were planning to, but it's not listed on the release dates on that webpage I listed above...
Regards,
Ross

I hope the 70 years of the Dandy book will come out....
the creature book sounds like we'll see Biffo...Mickey the monkey...pobble...koko the pup...gnasher...rasher...grockle...so sounds good...

This book is amazing...this is the way to go...original drawings...artists names...interesting deleted scenes...meeting the artist and a bit of history
Read on if you don't mind knowing whats in the book...spoilerish.....
It has features on top artists like Paddy Brennan showing his first work Sir Solomon Snoozer a knight...horse and a boy wake up after a long sleep of hundreds of years...came out in Sept 1949...wish I could read more just the first 2 panels..
Never heard of the Dandy's Zany zoo a rhyming joke for each animal..sadly no date with this or artist name..
Tomtin and Buster Brass a kind of robot cat he dresses up as Boots from Dick Whittingham for fancy dress drawn by Jack P which is great to see his other work..must have been his last as it was 1975!
other artists mentioned
Ron Spenser
Sunny Boy George Martin
Jack Prout lots of Black Bob...text story...a picture of him in the home guard with Dudley D Watkins...and a dog given to him which looked like Bob which is great
Charlie Griggs
Tom Paterson Laughing planet and a deleted character which looks good Nosey Porker
George Martin first Desperate Dawg drawing inked...also a Desperate Dawg not used showing the penciling where the word bubbles would be
Leo Baxendale....this is my favourite bit...orignal artwork on 3 bears..the text printed on yellow paper is stuck on to the page..also 2 story boards to make a whole..making lots of detail loved seeing this hope one day Leo Baxendale will get his own book showing originals ...first drawing of three bears early sketch Teddy looks like a Teddy boy
......Little Plum..Beano title panels which are great in 1960..also a very funny 10 little furry bears rhyme as they slowy get bumped off in the intro and back pages of 1958 Beano annual vey funny and brutal
Andy Hutton Red Rory of the eagles from 1959 Beano annual
Already mentioned the Charlie Griggs at 90 visiting the DC Thomson offices
Another interesting note Peter's pocket Grandpa is asked many times to be reprinted maybe Dandy extreem or Classics will be showing it....will see in a weeks time...

Now that sounds worthwhile getting. Anything that does feature on the behind the scenes of a comic fascinates me.

Could be wrong, but I think it's already out? I was in Smiths yesterday, and fairly sure this was among their annuals...

Well if it's any help I just had a look at the new Beano Annual and discovered that it contains a multi-part Billy the Cat tale in which he faces an evil version of General Jumbo!

I believe it's written by Kev Sutherland, and I'm pretty sure that Nigel Dobbyn has drawn it again.
There was a Dandy/Beano book a number of years ago made up of Adventure strips.

Indeed. The third book of the 'Golden Years' books to be produced, I believe.
