Dandy tribute in today's Independant

There might not have been any special 70th Birthday issue of Dandy Xtreme but this brilliant five-page comic strip celebration is everything that it might have been - and more. With a truly dazzling line-up of past and present characters from both Dandy and Beano (including a chance to see Dudley Watkins as a wartime Special Constable, and Minnie the Minx and Roger the Dodger drawing Leo Baxendale and Ken Reid) I really can't recommend it highly enough! There's even an opportunity to win a signed print of the cover for anyone who thinks they can name all 28 characters featured on it (so that's Kashgar then!). Completely and utterly unmissable!!!

Thanks Phil! I often (but not always) buy The Indie so I'll grab a copy today.

Thanks for pointing this out Phil. It certainly sounds a worthy tribute.
I only need to work out where am I going to put that signed print now!

Nice one Ken...
Lets hope there is a special 70 years Dandy......or turn Classics into one with only Dandy characters...
or make The Beano celebrate it... :)

Just heard from comic historian Paul Gravett that he may be on The One Show on BBC One tomorrow, 7pm (Tuesday 4th Dec) "talking with cricketer and comics fan Phil Tufnell about Beano, Dandy, Eagle and British comics, partly tying in with the repeats of Comics Britannia on BBC4 on Wed 5th and Thurs 6th".

Since I couldn't find any on The Indy's web-site, I've posted scans here:

DC Thomson's own Sunday Post ran a one-page feature in its magazine yesterday. There was a quote from the Dandy editor in there, saying that the Xtreme rebranding had proved "very popular". Shame that the comic itself doesn't seem to be marking its anniversary...

Best,
Christopher

Really was a nicely drawn tribute by Ken H. Of course there was a time when a comic strip tribute like this would have appeared in the comic itself, but sadly those days appear to be gone.

Well, we would've missed it if it had been in the comic. Different audiences etc. etc., as repeated ad nauseam on here. Great work, though.

This is slightly different from the oft heard cries in this forum re the piecemeal revival of 'ancient' comic characters who patently wouldn't appeal to my grand-daughter's generation, in that it would have been a one off event to celebrate the Dandy in all its guises, including the current one, getting to where it is now. And that said I don't think it would have been too much to ask to have had 'Xtreme' devote a few of it's pages to
commemorating the event.

Does today's issue mention anything? I haven't seen it yet.

only tiny clue maybe is a Korky and Bully Beef heads bobbing in the van window in Jsk and Todd...
