Hi, what is the exact period when Ken Reid’s Jonah ran in The Beano? Was the original Jonah ever reprinted in another comic or in some other form? Thanks!

Hi kp, Jonah ran for more than five years in the Beano ( approx 270 issues from memory) and Buddy ran for 130 issues in the 1980's so obviously Buddy didn't have time to reprint the whole Jonah run. Hornet reprinted Jonah in the 1970's too, but again nowhere near the full run.

Jonah in the Beano Nos 817(15/3/58) - 1090(8/6/63)
Jonah in Hornet (bw reprints) Nos 395(3/4/71) - 623(16/8/75)
Jonah in Buddy (full colour/ part colour reprints) all 130 issues.

Kashgar,a thought on Color front pages of comics.And in particular me old mate Adam Eterno.Would the artists of the strip have colored the cover page as well or would in-house colorists have been used?

I would say as a rule the artists would provide the finished pencilled artwork and then an in-house colorist would add the colour.

I suppose it's like saying who colored/painted the Golden Gate Bridge.It doesn't really matter as it is still a magnificent image to behold!But of course in comics it is slightly different.We struggle to uncover Artists and Writers,then we like to know who lettered and colored....I suppose these guys are even more shrouded in mist than their fellow media colleagues !!!!So full marks to Mills and Wagner for giving credits back in the early days of Battle,2000ad etc.

If it's any help, at one point Odhams artists were paid to provide their own colouring on the photogravure comics (eg. early issues of Wham!), while the newsprint titles had their colouring farmed out to outside agencies. As a matter of interest Baxendale was typically paid £78 for a two-page 'Eagle-Eye Junior Spy' set in Wham! during 1964, of which £10 was for the script and £20 was for the colouring. By contrast Linden Artists got a flat rate of just £2 per page to colour Baxendale's 'Grimly Feendish', R. Spencer's 'Man from B.U.N.G.L.E.' and Brian Lewis' 'Space Jinx' in Smash! no.6.
