Bob did some truly amazing work, esp the colour stuff he did for Bezer and Topper in the early 90s: I mean to write about that title at length sometime soon, as it was one of the funniest and original Childrens comics of all time: Bob's wonderful colourful and almost Psychedelic art style also adorned many babys comics, in particular "Twinkle", were it was highly suited and pleasing to the eye.

Not sure which one he coloured!!

Was it all the covers for Beezer and Topper......did he colour in Baby Crockett inside?

ah, there's been some confusion: though I referred to his "colour stuff", I meant the fully painted colour strips he did for Beezer etc: Bob was the very distinctive artist behind Sting and Atilla The Hen in The Beezer and Topper, plus many many one shot strips and posters: aurely the most prolific artist for that paper. He also did Emlyn the Gremlyn and The Three Bears in the late 80s for the Beano.

BOB drew a back page featuring a 'BEE' character in the later 'BEEZER'.......I also came across an extremely rare 'BAD PENNY' strip he did for ODHAMS in the 60s.

Yeah.. that was "Sting", or as it was originally known, "The Beezers".

To fully elaborate, I feel, I would need to post many lengthy scans from the comics..which I will strive to do in a seperate post. Suffice to say though, that with The combined Beezer and Topper title that ran from 1990-1993, there seemed to be a a real sense of experientation and fun that left the Dandy and the Beano at the time way behind: a lot of interesting one off characters and surprisingly adult humour (I don't mean anything crude or sexual, I mean sophistcated references and the like): It was almost compable to OINK! in the sense that a greater sense of freedom and fun was palpable beyond the regular constraints of the classic DC Thomson titles. Bob Dewar and Bill Ritchie, in particular, did a lot of odd one off comics that were "off the beaten path" for this title..

Perhaps the combined 'BEEZER/TOPPER' that ran between '90-93 was published by contributers who knew deep down that the 'death-knell' of the comic was imminent, and understandably adopted a 'let's-try-anything,-what-the-hell-we-have-nothing-to-lose' attitude, which would have explained the more LIBERATED approach that 'TOPPER 89' and the later 'BEEZER' displayed.

These comics [in the large 'broadsheet' format that ran until around '81] were vital and full of energy in the late '60s, but as the 70s wore on, I felt a sense of 'seen-it-all-too-many-times-before' formulae set in [though maybe this was just me getting cynical and older].

I agree that the late-80s tabloid 'BEEZER/TOPPER' saw a resurgence of fun and spirited experimentation which had been lacking in earlier years......alas, it was too late to stop the dwindling readership...

Did he draw this cover..I don't have any Bimbo comics so can't show the character Bimbo he drew.if anyone can scan in a page and put up here...I would be very grateful.blog post is being done at the moment.found the super teddy bear picnic in the Beano annual 1988. Boy that stayed in my mind...remember it very well..

thanks a lot Peter for posting that so swiftly! A great tribute: I hope it helps increase awareness of Bob's contribution. Incidentally Bob is still active drawing for educational books and packages in Scotland, where he lives.

Is he any relation to Jim, currently a DCT staff artist?

I will do another post on Bob shortly.found out in The Dandy as one offs he drew Whacko (Ron Spencer drew in the 70's) and Bad Manors School.
