In the month of the Beano's 70th birthday it is somehow appropriate that it is also the centenary of Dennis the Menace creator David Law's birth in Edinburgh in July 1908.

Don't know why but mention of David Law made me think of Steve Ditko. Both truly unique styles?

Yet when you think about it it's amazing how few characters he was associated with during his career after striking gold straight off with both Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril. Offhand the only other strips that I can recall are Cap'n Hand and Corporal Clott. It would have been fascinating to see what he might have come up with if Leo Baxendale had managed to persuade him to work for Wham! in the 1960s.

I don't think Davey Law did many characters (although Im sure someone will let us know if that is incorrect) the only other strip I remember by him was Calamity Jane although I have a vauge memory of anothr strip that he might have drawn that appeared as a middle page spread in the Dandy in th elate 60s erarly 70s (or could be getting mixed up)???

Calamity Jane was actually Hugh Morren, Moose. Davey Law's major comic output does really devolve down to only three strips Dennis, Beryl and Corporal Clott. His work on Cap'n Hand was very limited by comparison with him only drawing thirty or so episodes before Leo Baxendale and George Drysdale were called in to finish off the first series and Michael Barratt drew all of the second.

Davy Laws 3 characters are very strong...maybe he was an artist who liked to stick to a few and do them very well...

DAVEY LAW is a real paradox: he wasn't a brilliant artist by any means, but the sheer spirit his strips produced make his work still well-known today........I thought his stuff looked really messy as a kid reader in the 60s, but the dynamic energy in his work just leapt off the page, and to me his work was equally as important a factor as any other in making the 'BEANO' [and other comics] great.

I just realized his centenery is the same as that of TEX AVERY......another comic visionary who forged his own unique style.

Thanks Kashgar - Like Peter I thought Calamity Jane was Davy Laws work - still his work was fantastic - only 3 characters that's amazing really for a UK comics humour artist, but personally they 3 strips gave me great joy as a kid

just read the article steven and public health minister shona robinson wants beryl the peril to have an asbo because shes a bad rolemodel! never heard so much crap in all my life and just proves the morons in power live in cloud cuckoo land
