I recall seeing this style through a number of Fleetway annuals in the 1970s, but does anyone know who it is?

Looks decidedly "Alf Tupperish" I think and therein lies the answer,methinks.

It's very good though.

Definitely not Pete Sutherland (that's the Alf Tupper artist). Looks to me to be like the original V for Vengeance artist that did the Deathless men stories in the 60's. I think that his name was Pirrault, but I could be wrong!

Interestingly enough, I got a mail from Pete Sutherland's son the other day.

Well it seems from another credited source that this could be the work of one F.A. Philpott.

I was wondering if the A stood for Alan, as there was an Alan Philpott who worked on 'Lion' in the 1950s.

It is interesting to note that in some journals, Alan Philpott is erroneously credited as being the artist that drew Alf Tupper. I have yet to see any style that is definitively attrbuted to Alan Philpott. Perhaps Kashgar can shed a bit more light on this.

Whoever this artist is, it isn't Alan Philpott although admittedly it maybe someone doing a poor imitation of his style. Philpott's full name was, and possibly still is (he was born in 1916 if memory serves), Frederick Alan just to clear up what the initials F A stood for. He was one of my all time favourite artists especially as he drew so much for 'Victor' in the 1960's when I was reading it with strips like 'The Smasher', 'The Flaming Vulture', 'Crib Carson-Fighter' and 'The Shadow over Scrapper Grey' coming to mind.
He was also the original artist on the 'Hornet' 'V for Vengeance' series
so no wonder 'Coolcool' saw some similarity between this art sample above and the artist on the Hornet series.
Philpott also drew a good deal of stuff for AP's 'Lion' in the 1950's including the first series to feature Robot Archie 'Flying Saucers over Africa'. If you want any more info just let me know.

He drew, and is credited for (as 'F.A. Philpott' and 'A. Philpott'), a couple of colour strips in the early 'Express' annuals from the late 1950s. 'Gun Law', unless I'm mistaken. I confess seeing a similarity of style, even through the years.

I'm fairly sure the same artist as the one I posted used to do stuff for the early '2000AD' annuals or specials - 'Harlem Heroes' and 'Invasion' spring to mind - but no-one seems to have postitively identified him.

What is the title of the strip from which the featured example comes from? If I could see a bit more of the artist in questions work maybe a name would spring to mind.

It's the 'Pathfinders' strip from 'Look-In' in 1973.

have you a sample of that strip from look-in.you could ask my old friend colin shelbourne he is bound to know.He as you know was the editor in the 70;s for look-in. from john p britton.

i looked at the art bwfore reading the posts, and i thought it was fa philpott. then i saw his name as i read the rest of the thread. this is fa philpott, or frederick alan philpott. no doubts, i recognise the style against other credited works.

OK. I agree that the faces may be Alan Philpott but a lot of the artwork is certainly not his. Some sort of joint effort roughed out by FAP and completed by someone else at best.
