at last: BABY BOOMER

Post by ISPYSHHHGUY »

I know this has taken a long time, readers: I've been waiting to get the b*ggers copyrighted, hence the delay.......there are about 500 completed strips, although I will only be adding a select sample on here, not the entire lot [phew!].......please excuse the occassional smudging [the originals are clean]

Welcome to this insight into my infantile mind:

[that last one includes the only ph*rt gag of the entire lot: pretty restrained compared to DANDY X-treem.

my obsession with KING KONG is carried on into this strip: and initially I was worried about putting this copyrighted icon into the strip: I took advice over at CCGB on this, and they reckoned it should be OK, so long as he appears as a supporting character only. There was some concern that my cat character looked a bit like KORKY, well I actually drew Korky for DCT for a bit in the mid-80s, and I do concede there are similarities in design. But my humour is very different.....

I will likely add some more imagery at some stage.

I really like your style of drawing, Spy. I found the cat's trousers at the end of the bed in the first strip very funny, although I don't know why. Do the characters have names? Why does the cat have an eyepatch? All very intriguing...

Great strips - your artwork is excellent. Just out of interest, why did you chose the name Baby Boomer for your strip?

:D Very impressive indeed Rab - especially as the style is instantly recognizable and entirely your own!

But, er.... what on earth's going on between the cat and that giant ape??? :?

A nice 1930's/40's style..

I like the long distance joke best..
also the jeeper creeper joke..

Hope you draw some faces on the buildings like the 30's cartoons..and more surreal humour..

look forward to seeing more..

didn't know you drew Korky..

No wonder your Plagarism joke panel was so accurate!

Nice artwork Rab. Phone box on the moon was a good one, I agree with Peter about that.

Thank you for all your kind comments, readers......
Niblet, thanks for taking in the details: I appreciate it! Jonny: the name 'BABY BOOMER' is just a 'snappy' name I needed. [ Earlier names for the strip included 'RETRO ROCKET' and 'NARROW YOUR MIND'].I have no idea why my cat character has an eyepatch; it just 'happened'.

The characters all have names, and all will be revealed when I add the 'model sheets' of the characters on here next week.

It's a very silly strip I agree, and thank you Phil: KING KONG ['KOONG KING'S' his 'official' name here] is just being silly and has no further advances on the cat!

Thanks Muffy, Peter, Steelclaw, Digi, Peter and Mike for your comments......it took me 2 days to pluck up courage to read these comments!.......I'm relieved they are positive, as hardly anyone has ever seen this stuff.

More related drawings will follow on this thread.

On another site, I contribute quick, pocket-size cartoon gags which are drawn very swiftly: what with Easter coming up, we are doing egg jokes, and though this stuff is not really suitable for the BABY BOOMER strip, some similar 'egg' gags are planned for inclusion, with 'walking, talking' breakfast beings being planned for addition to the strip:

----that last idea is pretty controversial stuff, but perhaps it could be adapted for a satirical WW2 Propaganda poster. I'd never add this idea to 'BABY BOOMER', but the 'egg' idea in itself lends itself to endless gag-potential: it's probably possible to start up a strip idea on this premise alone.

Yeah pretty controversial, it's Chinese people's eyes that 'slant', Japanese ones are actually straight.

Incedentally for further egg puns there was some Sonic The Hedgehog gamebooks/novelisations in the 90's with plenty of them in. In the English-language 'story' of Sonic the bad guy became obsessed with eggs after being caught in an explosion created by 'evil crystals' which stored all the evil in the world, whilst also holding an egg. (In the Japanese-language story the baddie was just called "Eggman" XD). In one of the books the robots that he creates to take over the world are controlled by programming cartridges with names like "egg-splode", "egg-sterminate" and the like.

You can read the comic book origin here: http://thesoniczone.net/comics/sonicpromo/

Both Archie Comics Sonic and Fleetway's Sonic the Comic branch off from that one-off comic.

While Digi and Felney are off doing deep analysis, I'd like to say Rab that I like your style. It's a very zoot suit style, which can be timeless in the right hands and Rab, you're a get for getting it spot on. Encore, please.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

Thank you so much for your encouraging comments, colcool! I will be adding 'pre-production' sketches of my strip on here, which I think reveal more about how comics are done, and the thinking behind them.

Meanwhile, a bit later than I planned, here's the original 'model sheets' I done of three of the four central characters: these were done before any strips were actually turned out:

Image

BABY BOOMER'S name was the only one that came easily; I had this name from almost the beginning. The others were a real struggle: other cartoonists may have an easy time with names, but this task was seemingly never-ending.......however, the final names are:

Image

Image

for a long time, the characters simply had no names, and seeing I've been keeping dialogue down to a minimum [I try to put out as many silent 'pantomime' strips as possible] many strips do not carry names: however, I couldn't continue like this, and so I left blank spaces in the word-balloons so I could put in names when they surfaced.

VIBES is a slang word me and my mates used in our teens, even at that time this term was severely dated, and possibly dates from the later 60s.........it's certainly not a reference to drug-culture, and indeed although this is essentially a 'go-anywhere' strip, with Martian Invasions and even Atomic Bomb-blasts appearing with routine frequency, certain subjects are taboo: drugs simply don't exist in this world! [or my world].

Image

Image

Model character-sheets like these are more akin to the world of animation, however they are handy for comics too: say you yearn to draw MINNIE the MINX for example: definitive character poses along these lines definately help to 'sell' your ability to publishers like D C Thomson. Editors can tell at a glance if your stuff has potential or not....

The fourth of my 4 central characters is the female cat with the long hair......she evolved later on, and no character sheets exist thus far of this lass.........I hope to get one together sometime soon, though.
More on this character in the next instalment on here.
It has to be said that characters definately evolve naturally over time, and indeed these early 'blueprints' look less-than-definitive when seen today.....an updated version of the above is planned for some future time, though not at the mo'...........

more behind-the-scenes stuff coming up!
