Cops and Robbers

Post by Kashgar »

A special section in this months Classics is devoted to the theme of 'Cops and Robbers' which allows for outings for the likes of Figaro, the Badd Lads, Fred the Flop, PC Big Ears, Young Sid the Copper's Kid and Nick Kelly as well as a text complete culled from the pages of Adventure featuring Dixon Hawke.
It doesn't go into specifics with regard to the Dixon Hawke story 'The Case of the Angry Eye' (which has a nice heading block illustration supplied by Ian Kennedy) beyond labelling it as being from 1959 but, for the record, it actually appeared in Adventure No 1796 dated 20th June, one of thirteen Hawke completes that appeared in the paper in that year. Again, without going into specifics, it also states that Hawke was a star of the paper from 1921 to 1961, which is true. The first Hawke story 'The Smiling Mask' being a complete that appeared in the very first issue and the last being the final instalment of the Hawke serial 'The City of Frightened Men' which ran from No 1863 to the penultimate issue of the paper No 1877 dated 7th Jan 1961.
BTW in this section there is an art credit that is in error. It states that 'Bill the Burglar' reprinted from the pages of the first Dandy Monster Comic in 1939 is the work of Harry Banger when, in fact, it is the work of Frank Minnitt.

In fact there is another error with regard to the 'Bill the Burglar' strip. It is reprinted from the second Dandy Monster Comic for 1940. He doesn't actually appear in the first 1939 edition.

Never heard of Bill the Burglar, and I would've done if he was in the 1939 annual, as I have the recent Aurum fascimile of it. Haven't bought this month's Classics yet, but only because I haven't been anywhere that sells it since it came out - hopefully I'll get it tomorrow.

Peter, did you get this in the end? Our local WH Smith had quite a few copies this month (it's hit and miss as to whether they get any at all, though to be fair they have consistently had it in for the past few months). If you're willing to pay the cost of the comic plus P&P I'd be happy to pick one up if there are any left?
