THE 2010 WORLD CUP THREAD

Post by steelclaw »

Who will win the world cup?

Every four years(When England are in it)the press/Players say they will bring the cup home but only once have they done it, I reckon quarter finals at best for England.

BACK HOME

Back home, they'll be thinking about us
When we are far away
Back home, they'll be really behind us
In every game we play
They'll share every goal we are scoring
Out there
We will still hear them roaring
And we'll give all we've got to give
For the folks back home

Back home, they'll be watching and waiting
And cheering every move
Back home, though they think we're the greatest
That's what we've got to prove
Once more we will meet with the best
Like before we'll be put to the test
Oh we will give all we've got to give
For the folks back home

They'll see as they're watching and praying
That we put our hearts in our playing
We'll fight until the whistle goes
For the folks back home
WORLD IN MOTION vs NEW ORDER - 09/06/1990
2 weeks at #1 - 12 weeks on chart

Some of the crowd are on the pitch
Some of the crowd are on the pitch
They think it's all over, it is now

This is the cup we want.

With two love rats and a drug cheat in the squad I won't be watching England. Men with no integrity or honour. Alf Tupper must be turning in his Malt Vinegar.

I'll be supporting England of course... and anybody playing against France. I haven't forgotten how they screwed Republic of Ireland out of their place in the tournament.

Well that's the drug cheat out of it, just the 2 vile Chelsea players to go.

You mean Ferdinand right? Drogba's out for Ivory Coast, although I'm guessing he isn't one of two Chelsea players you mean. That's two countries without their captains.

Cole & Terry for England I've never liked either of those 2, but if they score for England you never know.

By all accounts they've both been scoring pretty regularly during the recent season. Practice makes perfect, so I'm told! :D

I really think England have a great chance of winning the World Cup this year. You have a relatively easy section this time and a pretty good squad with lots in depth - not an England fan so not sure if Reo Ferdinands injury (which sadly for him has finished his World Cup) is a major blow or not. Of course we in Scotland will be cheering you all on as usual (lol aye right!) - Seriously though have a great World Cup and enjoy at least you lot got there and won't make a "coos ear" of it like Scotland usually do. Although didn't England "win" the World Cup in around 1970 when Adairs Anglicans (if thats the name) represented them??

I think that Duncan Scott had it right in Beano Max - three predictions in one double-page spread that England would lose in the quarter finals on penalties ;)

Kashgar - thanks for that, a bit of a slip there in the name lol - I envy not being "involved" in the excitment of the countdown to the first game as my teams not there, so enjoy its a great feeling - it could very well be a massive year for England if you avoid bad refs, hands of God and injury (maybe heat though doubt it) oh and penalty shoot outs lol.

I think the England line up in the first match could well be, in a 4-4-2 formation:

James

Johnson King (maybe, not sure) Terry A Cole

Lennon Barry (if fit) Lampard Gerrard

Crouch Rooney

I've said James because he's been given the no. 1 jersey, that seems to suggest he's first choice 'keeper. I'm not absolutely certain who's going to be centre back, I've said King as he was playing in the friendlies, but it could be Carragher or even Upson (preferably not him though). I can't see Dawson getting any game time.

Also, if Barry's not fit for the first game, I think England should move Gerrard into the centre and play Joe Cole on the left as Carrick doesn't merit a starting spot on current form. Finally, I've said Crouch up front - I think this is more or less decided, he scored in the warm up matches, he's been given the no. 9 and I don't think Defoe and Rooney would work as a partnership. I find it hard to fathom why Heskey's in the squad based on form but then again if the other players like playing with him and he can play better at international level than for his club then his inclusion is justified.

The BBC are showing Classic World Cup highlights on channel 301 on Freeview. Been going a few nights now. Several minutes of a dozen matches or so. Earliest I saw was 1970. Its on now.
