Only just heard about Gene's death. I know he didn't work directly for the UK but this sort of thing transcends national boundaries.

I quite agree. Like Frazetta, who died a couple of years back, Colan was an astounding artist with a wonderfully atmospheric style. His Tomb of Dracula and Howard the Duck are classics.

Really sad. I can't really add to what you two have said.

Oooops sorry about this I just posted this on the main comics thread - apologies for the duplication - Gentleman Gene was genuinely one of my all time favourite artists - I still think his Daredevil work is some of the best art ever in comics - 3 of my all time favourite comics are Genes Colans: Captain America issues 121 and 122 and Daredevil 87 I hunted these issues down again a few years ago and they still had that "magic" - His Dracula and Howard the Duck were just amazing as well - It hard to believe that Colans art was pretty revolutionary at the time for mainstream comics, most artist copied Kirby and a handful of others and then this photo realistic artists came along and shook it all up producing 2 books a month for along period of time (sometimes 3 a month) I cant think of another artists that produced so much stunning work year in and year out decade after decade as Gene Colan did - thanks for the fun Gene I loved every minute of it.

Yes, I really liked his Captain America stories inked by Joe Sinnott (not to mention the one he did with Wally Wood) - though my favourite Colan art tended to be inked by Tom Palmer. Of course he was a pretty good inker himself, as can be seen in his early Warren stories (I also loved those strips that were shot from his pencils). It was horrible to see him treated so badly during Jim Shooter's reign at Marvel.
