The Beano Annual? No its the annual beano.

My local paper has a weekly history page - here is the latest. I remember my local pub having an annual beano. The Jolly Gardners pub is still going strong up the road and now you know where the word Beano comes from. The shop on the far right of the top picture is now the Lion's Den cafe. The Den being about half a mile away. And notice the abundance of cloth caps - cheesecutters we called them as they were shaped like those flat conkers that were called cheesecutters.

"A merry time". Well, you can see why the comic is called Beano then. Reading it was supposed to be exactly that. And this article shows that name wasn't always as anachronistic as it seems now.
