What is the font used in the Beano and Dandy comics? Also, what is the cover text of The Beano?

Dunno about The Beano, but The Dandy uses a font from Comicraft that Dave Gibbons designed. (It's actually called "Dave Gibbons"). It costs $39.00 from ComiCraft. http://www2.comicbookfonts.com/

Just put the word Gibbons in the search box of the site and you'll find it.

But while you're there, check out the Active Images link for some great comics. Including, ahem, Brickman Begins!

Hello all,

Are all comics text done by adding lettering afterwards by computer or is there still comic artists who add their own text by whatever means?

If any artists (Lew, Kev, Steve B, etc) that appear on this board and still add their own lettering what materials do they use? Rotring pens? Potato print? Throw a beetle in some ink and let it crawl across the page in the hope it spells out some words??

I've been looking at some Hunt Emerson work lately and that looks like brush work but any info would be appreciated!

Ta much,
Mark

Hunt does use a brush for his artwork, but not sure about lettering. I'm seeing him on Thursday so if I remember I'll ask him.

Personally, I use Rotring pens for lettering. Although I rarely letter my own strips now unless I'm doing a page for Viz. The strips I do for Toxic, Rampage, etc are lettered in the editorial offices using computer fonts. (Comicraft ones I think).

There's a great book I bought from Amazon recently entitled The DC Comics Guide to Colouring and Lettering Comics which looks brilliant and very informative. (Haven't had chance to read it all yet).
