CHECKING OUT NEWSAGENTS

I for one can't pass a newsagent without checking out what comics they have. Old habit. I get the impression many on this forum hardly look at modern comics. Am I wrong? Questionaire. Are you:

a) The sort who rarely checks out the comics because "Bah! They're not like they used to be".

b) The sort who goes straight for the comics you always buy and ignore the rest.

The sort who regularly leafs through any comic to keep up with developments.

I'll check out newsagents to see what kind of comics/magazines they have. With distribution of these becoming somewhat erratic, it helps to know which shops are likely to stock a title. Having said that, the New Captain Scarlet comic didn't appear in several newsagents I usually bank on for other stuff...

I usually just ask my dad to get me a Dandy and Beano from Sainsburys and when I'm in town I sometimes look briefly in the WHSmith magazine section to see if there are any new ones.

i miss the days when newsagents used to get the marvel and dc comics in as you could always find stuff that had sold out in eternal comics or any of thecomic shops in central london.i remember buying at least 5 copies of xfactor 1 when it came out,there was always a few gems in those bundles though sometimes they had comag stickers on that were hard to remove.

Hardly any US imports in newsagents now but we are back to the situation as it was in the Fifties in that we have British editions of various Marvel comics (and one DC). Panini are producing some great comics at present and in my opinion the package looks better than the US originals. At 76 pages for ?2.50 they're better value too.

I agree with Lew, Pannini produce a fantastic package and a great deal - much better than the US item and although Marvel UK form the 1970S were my Fav comics (outside of Odhams 3 books Wham SMASH and Pow)I think the current Marvel/DC UK versions are 100 times better than the 70's. As stated previously on another thread, I personally don't but UK newsagent comics (direct sales comics I do buy) as I am to old for them all , but I always look through the racks of comics when in a newsagent and see whats on sale just in case

My concern in recent months is not quantity anymore but quality.

What I dream of are more new comics produced in Britain with new Brit talent. Beano, Dandy, 2000AD and The Megazine are a good backbone, and now there's original UK material in Action Man and Spider-Man, as well as stuff in Toxic and Wickid (neither of which I can thumb through cos they're always bagged), the state of the shelves is better than it has been in a long time.

Will we ever see another new all-comic publication in newsagents?

I check out the newsagents every week. I get Batman Legends (Panini) and Batman Adventures (Titan) wvery month. I got Marvel Rampage this week, it has some nice UK strips in it. Picked up a 2000AD last month. Tried a few of the new Dandy when it came out.

The Newsagent I've been in a few times near Clapham Junction has just started stocking "Classic from the comic" Fun Size "Dandy" and "Beano" and "Commando" as well as all the "Panini" comics.
