I've got it somewhere..I'll try and track it dwn and give you what you're looking for..

it wasn't quite the last Buster, but a few of the strips acknowledged their demise ...Fred's Bed in particular had a pretty bizzare final installment, with the England team being characatured and the bed exploding at the end...

Not a lot. It was all reprint by then, except for one page drawn by Jack Oliver which showed the fates of the Buster characters. Odd-Ball was burst IIRC and Tom Thug passed his exams or something. (Not the ending for Tom that I had in mind at all but I wasn't asked.

My ending would have had Tom meet his Dad's old teacher and discover that his Dad had been lying about his days as a hard nut. It would be revealed that his Dad was actually a softie at school! But he wanted Tom to be the bully he never was. Realising that it's not in Tom's genes to be a top bully, Dad comes to terms with it, stops pressurising Tom and the family take up poetry and going to operas.

Although thinking about it, that ending's not much cop either!

No I love that ending idea you have, much better than the Buster one.
