anyone knows this artist...?

Post by RuthB »

Does anybody knows who the artist of this strip is? It was published in Spain in 1970 under the name of Dorita, I've no clue who the artist is or what it was called or where it was published.

Ah well, I have check every single UK comic artist in Lambiek (A-Z one by one) and could not find any artists remotely close to this style. Either he is not listed or he is and changed register and could not recognize the style any more.

Will check the Dutch artists just in case. We got all our stories and strips mainly from UK (after Spanish one, of course) followed but French/Belgian artists and later on in time by Dutch.

Will keep me busy for a while!

It looks a bit American, could it be from a syndicated newspaper strip? I'm reminded of the style of the Little Lotta and Little Dot comics by Harvey. Looking at it again the style is a bit like Hank Ketcham's Dennis the Menace.

If it is American then it is done by an American artist that would have done it for a UK publication as this comes under the Syndication International stamp. Will have a look at those astists you suggest

No, I don;t think it has nothing to do with them.

Looking up closely I wonder if this was a Belgiam strip maybe (the face of the father seems very familiar to me) and if it could be from Spirou by ed. Dupuis.

Will investigate further...

For what it's worth Ruth I came to the same conclusion. Some of the characters in the strip bear something of a resemblance to the work of Belgian artist Jean Roba or someone of that ilk. Also, the door in the first panel certainly looks more European in style than either British or American.

He is similar but not the artist you are looking for Ruth. The noses shows a different style for each artist. Also the eyes show a distinct different in style as well.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

The Vandersteen studio which included Boumans for a time
had some of their strips eg the Snook Family and Big Billy Bigg reprinted
in D C Thomson's Sparky.

I am driving myself bananas but I will find him/her. Will check all the Belgian artists tomorrow. I have checked so far to the C. Wil continue tomorrow.

And yes, it is the nose thing, because so far most of the other artists drew roundy noses

Like Kashgar I can't help thinking there's a resemblance to the work of Jean Roba, whose strip 'Boule et Bill' was reprinted as 'It's a Dog's Life' on the back page of Valiant during the 1960s.

This work will be very difficult to pinpoint , especially if it is European, as lots of their cartoonists draw in a very similar, interchangable style [think Asterix/Lucky Luke, even the mid-late 60s Buster character by Nadal] --a bit like all the Baxendale clones we used to get over here.
It's a great style for all that, though--very appealling.

This European style--assuming that is where this work derives from------ also looks inspired by American cartooning [think Dennis the Menace by Hank Ketcham] to blur the definition even further.

Maybe Roba maybe Jean De Mesmaeker, why do you not ask in forolatia? There know a lot of franco-belgian authors. I'm interested too.
