Tom Frame has died

Have just read a message on the Yahoo Groups website from John Freeman (Down The Tubes) that veteran letterer Tom Frame, whose work has graced the page of many a British comic, has died, having lost his battle with cancer.

That's sad... even before I opened the thread I knew who you meant. It's rare for a letterer to be so distinguished and widely remembered.

Tom was totally unparalleled. You only have to look at any page of Judge Dredd to see why - especially anything including the Dark Judges.
He'll be sorely missed, if not for his lettering (he switched to computer a number of years ago), then certainly for his "special" speech balloons.

I socialised in Tom's company a couple of times. A good bloke. Very much of the "old school" of Fleetway; down to earth and unpretentious.
His lettering gave a distinct look to those early issues of 2000 AD, with the enlarged balloons being part of that great "in yer face" style that 2000 AD had back then.
Bad lettering and clumsy balloon placement can ruin a comics page but Tom's work was always top notch. Some of today's "designers" could learn a thing or two about balloon placement from looking at his pages. But then again good lettering skills are instinctive; you've either got it or you haven't. And Tom had that instinct.

I'm really, really sorry to hear that news. Tom was one of the real characters from the 'old days' and it was an honour to know have known him back in the good old days when he'd tell us bizarre anecdotes over a drunken game of pool, or, come up with a reason why pages were late that were so 'out there' that nobody minded. Even after all these years, when a few old 'IPCers' get together, you can be certain that Toms name will come up at some point in connection with a funny story (usually involving drunken roving and lost artwork).
A right gent. The world has lost a genuine character and a thoroughly nice bloke. RIP.
