was just looking through animationarchive.org and found a post about an artist called milt gross, who i wasn't aware of.

http://www.animationarchive.org/pics/gross306-big.jpg

what stood out to me was the similarity of his character Pop to our own Desperate Dan, right down to the outfit, moustache, hat. not sure which character came first though.

anyway, just thought it might be of interest. a mild diversion, if you will.

The inspiration for the look of Desperate Dan came very close to home for Dan's original artist, the legendary Dudley D Wtakins. It was this man...

Albert Barnes - first editor of The Dandy, who reputedly had a chin like a chest of drawers.

There's a Milt Gross biography at http://www.bpib.com/gross.htm, which suggests that That's My Pop appeared in the 'thirties.

Superman was largely influenced, according to his creators (Schulster and Siegel himself ) by Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars and Tarzan - although they also mentioned Zorro, as well as Popeye, as Peter noted. I think Dan was influenced, as Steve suggest, by Albert Barnes (well I read that somewhere as well) .
