THE DR WHO COMIC STRIP:PART 3:JON PERTWEE
THE DR WHO COMIC STRIP:PART 3:JON PERTWEE
In 1964,approxiametly a year after the television series had started, the Doctor Who comic strip started and continues today.
These are the adventures of the third Dr, played by Jon Pertwee, from Tv Comic to Countdown ,including specials and annuals.
Obviously comics of the third Dr have been produced in more recent eras but I will just be looking at his adventures in comic format during his time.

Re: THE DR WHO COMIC STRIP:PART 3:JON PERTWEE
So....Before moving on to the third adventure, these are my thoughts from reading these:
The first story is very similar to a Troughton TV Comic story. There was a 7 week gap between the last 2nd Dr tale and this and frankly it's just the same. rather disappointing.
The second story is far better and does seem to usher in a new era. Although it is very Thunderbirds to be honest.

Think "Spearhead From Space" and you are not wrong.

Re: THE DR WHO COMIC STRIP:PART 3:JON PERTWEE
Thoughts: In my opinion the Pertwee strips were vastly superior to the Hartnell and Troughton strips, as much as I love them.
Many people see "Countdown/Tv Action" as the moment when the Dr Who comic strip became something special, however I believe that the genesis of the evolution of the Dr Who strip actually began with the second strip in TV Comic "The Multi Mobile" (as mentioned above) and continued growing. With story 4 we have Alan Fennell from TV21/Look-in fame and with his talent it's no surprise that the strip is excellent and heads us into a new, more thoughtful, direction.

5) ASSASSIN FROM SPACE
TV COMIC HOLIDAY SPECIAL 1970
WRITER:ROGER COOK
ARTIST:PATRICK WILLIAMS
DATE: JUNE 1970
This story is a brief Summer Special entry and doesn't add to the Pertwee strips; it's just very silly. A tall alien tries to kill the Dr in a park at night.

STORY EIGHT: DR WHO AND THE ROCKS FROM MARS
TV COMIC ISSUES 970 -976
WRITER:ALAN FENNEL
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE: 18/07/70 - 29/8/70
A British space exploration site run by Professor Logan has sent astronauts to Venus.
This story has strong links with the television story "Ambassadors of death" and while titled "Rocks from Mars" actually used the planet Venus due to instructions from the BBC.
Whilst the Target book series usually title their books "DR Who and" etc (adding the title of the TV story), in reality this only occurred once in the tv show for "Dr Who and the Sillurians" so it is curious seeing the strip doing the same thing.

STORY 9: DR WHO AND THE ROBOT
TV COMIC ISSUES 977 -984
WRITER:ALAN FENNEL
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE: 5/9/70 - 24/10/70
Again with the title the "and" thing.
Target didn't start the books range until 1973 so this is not connected.
So similar to Tom Baker 1974 story "Robot", frankly these guys deserve a credit for that story and a percentage of DVD rights.
Basically, Professor Reardon builds a robot that goes a bit mad as it misses it's dog.

WRITER:ROGER NOEL COOK
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE:SEPTEMBER 1970
On board the Brigadiers' private luxury yacht, the Doctor and the Brig are captured by a castaway who controls a giant squid with his whistle.
AND IF THAT SOUNDS BAD.....
They escape by Jon Pertwee using Patrick Troughtons' flute.
Seriously couldn't make it up....

STORY 11: LEVITATION
TV COMIC ANNUAL 1971
WRITER:ROGER NOEL COOK
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE:SEPTEMBER 1970
The Doctor captures a spy by using his newly acquired power of levitation.
FACT: The TV comic annual 1971 was not great with DR Who but Mighty Moth etc were worth the price of admission.

STORY 12: TRAIL OF FIRE
TV COMIC ISSUES 985 -991
WRITER:ALAN FENNEL
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE: 31/10/70 - 12/12/70
And we are back to the good stuff....
The Doctor and Tom Streeter ( a former police detective and pub landlord) fight against the fire creatures.
Excellent strip and ties in with "Inferno".
TV Comic were actually watching the TV show and have produced 4 stories similar(well at least influenced) to the televised ones from Pertwees' first season.
When you take the specials and annuals away, this has actually been a fantastic run of stories.
People wrongly believe that the DR Who strip started getting great with "Countdown" comic.
The truth is TV comic not only began the run of classic third DR stories but also often surpassed Countdown.

STORY 13: THE KINGDOM BUILDERS
TV COMIC ISSUES 992 -999
WRITER:ALAN FENNEL
ART:JOHN CANNING
DATE: 19/12/70 - 06/02/71
John Henderson has a time travelling bulldozer.
This is everything that makes the TV Comic stories great, the tongue in cheek crazy fantasy approach.
The Doctor volunteers to give it a go and ends up in 2971.
The next issue (TV Comic 1000) would announce that issue 999 had been the last DR Who TV Comic strip and that it would continue in a new comic "Countdown".
After 6 years and 2.5 months, the DR who TV Comic strip that began in issue 674 was over. For now.
