Jimmy Hughes artwork
Jimmy Hughes artwork
Hi all,
Has anyone ever heard of a strip called "McMennypatch Monarchs"? This a piece of my uncles original artwork which I will be getting framed but I know nothing about it. If it was ever published or date he drawn it, I'm assuming it was before he started drawing bully beef and jocks & geordies. I do know my dad (Jimmy's brother) had this piece since at least early 70s.
Thanks in advance.

Big art collector here. To be honest I've never heard of this strip? You could be right though how it's a page done by your uncle Jimmy Hughes that was not picked up by the publisher for various reasons. It does happen. I have tried to do some research on the net for you to find some pictures and further information but have drawn a total blank? It could be the only example in existence therefore a rarity.
Well, hello there!

Thanks for that, I will try to upload a photo of the piece of work, I have recently been going through my late fathers belongings and found quite a bit more of my uncles artwork, some watercolour paintings of houses he has lived, a lot of individual drawings of corporal clott, bully and the jocks these look like they were quick ideas, also a full script for a jocks strip from DC Thomson along with most of the initial drawings to go with it, a small strip for "one tun & two tun" and a full size ink page of "dirty dick"

Thanks Yekal. Will be interesting to see a picture of the page in question. But it's great to know you are custodian of your uncles work too. In good hands I feel.Yekal wrote: 15 Jul 2025, 22:44 Thanks for that, I will try to upload a photo of the piece of work, I have recently been going through my late fathers belongings and found quite a bit more of my uncles artwork, some watercolour paintings of houses he has lived, a lot of individual drawings of corporal clott, bully and the jocks these look like they were quick ideas, also a full script for a jocks strip from DC Thomson along with most of the initial drawings to go with it, a small strip for "one tun & two tun" and a full size ink page of "dirty dick"

Attached are a couple of my uncles pieces of work, one is a water colour of the living room of a house where he used to live, I have another couple of water colour paintings of the outside of 2 different houses where he lived.
The other picture is an ink drawing of an unknown strip, I think this is prior to his published work, it is the same size as the other artwork I have approx 22"x15"

Thanks for uploading those pages Yekal. They look superb. Nice to see not only one of your uncles strip pages but also his still life work.Yekal wrote: 19 Jul 2025, 00:52 Attached are a couple of my uncles pieces of work, one is a water colour of the living room of a house where he used to live, I have another couple of water colour paintings of the outside of 2 different houses where he lived.

I have approximately 35 various pieces of my uncles artwork, 20 of which are full size original ink artwork, although I am still missing "Corporal Clott" also "one tun & two tun" I only have a couple of these in sketch form.

Nice to know you have a substantial portfolio of you uncle Jimmy Hughes work Yekal. But I find often that the artist themselves and their family often don't have examples of art produced and it's not unheard of them trying to source examples from auction houses or private collectors.Yekal wrote: 19 Jul 2025, 22:50 I have approximately 35 various pieces of my uncles artwork, 20 of which are full size original ink artwork, although I am still missing "Corporal Clott" also "one tun & two tun" I only have a couple of these in sketch form.
I deal with quite a few comic artists myself. And in the past have been told that even though they did work for various comics were rarely were given issues by the publisher and they had to source copies themselves to see their art in print. An eye-opener.

Fortunately I have inherited a lot of the artwork, but I have also puchased a number of pieces from people who watch me on TV and offered me them at what I feel was a reasonable cheap price. Typical of my luck I always miss auctions or people tell me about it afterwards!

Yeah, know what you mean Yekal. Very frustrating to be so close only to miss out. It's difficult to have eyes and ears everywhere unless you have contacts at auction houses that would alert you of any of your uncle's art. I myself have about 200+ pages from various artists. You can see some examples listed on the forum. Bit of a memorabilia magpie me.Yekal wrote: 20 Jul 2025, 19:49 Fortunately I have inherited a lot of the artwork, but I have also puchased a number of pieces from people who watch me on TV and offered me them at what I feel was a reasonable cheap price. Surely you can't display that amount of work, do you have them in folders?
Maybe you could help with this artwork, I have 4 pieces with my uncles stuff, could this be drawn by him? And I assume from "The Dandy"?

Loving the page Yekal. Very nice. To be honest it does looks a little like some 'Just Jimmy' pages done by artist Hugh Morren that I own. Your uncle must have known him working for the dandy and was either given or obtained it being a fan himself. It does happen. Both likely admired each other. Morren might have even owned some of your uncles work.Yekal wrote: 21 Jul 2025, 10:30 Surely you can't display that amount of work, do you have them in folders?

Grabbing at straws here. Wonder if this character was a nod to your uncle? Check out the forum link.

Yeah, got about 95% of my art in large A2 art folders with the remainder framed. At the start I did attempt to frame each one but the cost was immense. The folders are not cheap, or the sleeves too, but they serve a purpose. Keeps the art safe.

Re: Jimmy Hughes artwork
Thanks for that information, the pieces of just Jimmy I have are dated October 1956, July 1957 and 2 from 1958.
It would be great if I could find out if the character was named after my uncle, but I suppose this far down the line we will never know.
My uncle within the family was only known as Jim or uncle Jim, it seem that everyone comic related called him Jimmy. I have many fond memories of sitting with him while he would draw.

Hi Yekal. Yeah, it does sounds plausible I must admit. But I know what you mean about characters being called Jimmy.Yekal wrote: 21 Jul 2025, 18:49 Thanks for that information, the pieces of just Jimmy I have are dated October 1956, July 1957 and 2 from 1958.

Bit of information. I found out that the Dandy character 'Just Jimmy' was indeed created by your uncle Jimmy Hughes.
I'd be very surprised if he didn't use his real name for the character. Too much of a coincidence. Not sure if he initially drew any pages, but I do know the strip was drawn by fellow artist Hugh Morren between the years 1956 & 58.

Re: Jimmy Hughes artwork
Thanks again for that information, I will have another look through all the sketches I have from my uncle and see if there is anything relevant to his early stuff, but I think most of it is bully & the jocks.
