Yep, last page is cool! Loved Dave Gibbons' text piece as well - good to see that WildStorm recognised the importance of kicking the book off with some historical perspective (Albion #1 could have done with something similar).

I will now pick up Thunderbolt Jaxon (Jackson?) after the recommendations on this thread. I wasn't going to because I do believe Albion has been disappointing. There was a wonderful opportunity to make it something like the Watchmen with the rich history of the characters, but instead, for me at least, I found something I barely recognised. If you're resurrecting old characters but nobody really knows who they are and there is no background info, what's the point?

I really enjoyed it, irrespective of how it's spelt! Great art from Higgins and I'm interested to see where Gibbons is going to take it. I seriously doubt that there are that many fans of the old series actually knocking around to be offended or otherwise. TJ is far more obscure than any of the characters appearing in Albion plus his original 1949 run is really very simplistic narrative-wise. It's far less sophisticated than golden age US stuff you can find in DC's archive series. I've got a bunch of the Knockouts that reprint his origin story from Comet (plus that 1960 annual reprinted in Dave's issue one text intro) and Dave & John's update really has very little to do with the original. Not a bad thing, I think, 'cause the original (while nicely drawn, particularly when Ian Kennedy came on board) is little more than yet another boy-to-man version of Captain Marvel, Marvelman, et al. Roll on issue two!

Cheers guys. Some grown-up discussion about comics at last. Reading the previous entries it's little wonder people mock comic book readers. I too am unaware of this Thunderbolt character but will approach it the same way as I did Marvelman (later Miracleman) years ago. I do think the retrospective articles are important no matter how much the writer/ artist intend to change the basic premise. Alan moore did this with both Marvelman and The Watchmen (who didn't really have a past to draw on) so why not Albion?

I've got a feeling that Thunderbolt Jaxon #1 carries that useful/amusing text introduction as a direct result of the feedback WildStorm received about Albion NOT having one. A guy in my local shop knows Andrew Sumner (the IPC publishing director who set this line of comics up with DC/WildStorm). Sumner told him that ALL future IPC/WildStorm books would carry an intro page - and he wished that Albion #1 had done the same. Apparently, an Albion collected edition WILL happen after the final 3 issues have published (i.e. when Shane Oakley's art has been completed) and the collection WILL contain an introduction, character glossary, etc.

Sorry, Dez. I did know that you wrote MM piece but must have forgotten. I really enjoyed it. I sometimes get more excited about those character history things than the comics themselves. Roy Thomas, when at Marvel comics often used to put text pieces in new releases of Sub-mariner, The Human Torch, The Invaders, etc. I sometimes get those old mags out just to read the historic bits. Who needs story and art?
