When I was a kid Terry Bave was one of my favourite IPC artists. I loved The Slimms, and Calculator Kid, and Toy Boy and Willy Worry... all those classics. For a long time, in the 1990s, he also drew Winker Watson in The Dandy for DC Thomson, but now his work only crops up occassionally in the monthly 'Fun Size Dandy'. I have no idea how old Terry must be now, but I have noticed a huge downturn in the quality of his work. If you look at his Desperate Dan story in the current Fun Size Dandy you'll see what I mean. I'm not sure if it's because he is old, or whether his heart's not in it anymore, but his old sparkle and attention to detail has disappeared. Does anyone else know anything about Terry? Ken H. Harrison is in his 60s now, and Brian Walker is over 70, but their work is as fresh as ever.

And what about dave Sutherland? He's in his late 70's now. Does anybody know if Terry has an email address? If so what is it as I have just set up 2 new websites, one for Buster and the other for Whoopee, and I would like an interview site on each of them.

All kinds of things can affect the quality of linework, if indeed that is the case. (I have not seen Terry's recent work). However it's a little ungracious on a public forum to compliment a "favourite" artist in one breath then put down his current work in the next in such a way. Sorry, but that's my opinion.

Mine was just an observation, not a criticism. I wanted to know if anybody knew anything about Terry, and perhaps whether his age was a contributing factor to his obvious change in style. I don't know anything about his 'real life' outside of comics...

Maybe he just isn't suited to Desperate Dan. His Baby Herc story last year was as fresh as ever.

With respect, it's still not a polite thing to ask on a public message board. Think of Mr.Bave's feelings if it got back to him, or how it might affect his chances of work if an editor read it and thought he was past it.

I think it's a valid question. We're here to discuss artists' work - good or bad. If an artist's style has changed then it's fair enough to ask questions about it. I've seen the Desperate Dan story mentioned, and it isn't very good, but let's not forget how terrific Terry's old work was. Perhaps he was just having an off-day!

Desperate Dan is one of the toughest of all comic charcters to ghost, especially since such high standards of draughtsmanship have been set over his lifetime by great artists such as Dudley Watkins and Ken Harrison. Terry Bave is not a ghost artist and should never have been asked to draw Dan. Terry Bave is a class act when he's drawing Terry Bave strips. Not all artists are ghosters, and it's unfair to judge them on work they shouldn't have been doing in the first place.
