There is a brilliant awful Desperate Dan in the book..a room full of cow pie!!!!! I have the original annual it appeared in..

I wish the Dennis book had more early stuff and not quite as much recent..though the recent is good I have those..

Had a look in the shop earlier, that opening text alongside the first few strips looks familiar... I think they copy/pasted it from the book they did for Dennis's 50th birthday!

I've recently got into The Broons and Oor Wullie a lot more and love seeing the early work..
As a guess maybe both books will do World war 2 next time..

I love this book! I think it really shows D D Watkins at his very best as a humorous artist. Lovely flowing brushstroke with absolute assurance, just the right amount of black on the page, hilarious facial expressions and beautiful speech balloons and lettering. It's the collection that changed DDW for me from an artist I respected into one of my real favourites.

The content is especially interesting for historical reasons, of course, particularly in the Broons strips where nearly every storyline is affected by the war. Though I must admit I read the Oor Wullie strips first.

25% off all annuals at Waterstones. However, one thing displeases me. They're classified as "5-8 Bestsellers". Ages 5-8? Seriously? Simpsons, Bart Simpson, Beano, and Dandy are surely aimed at a slightly older audience than that (6-12, I reckon), and I'd say the Jacqueline Wilson one is as well. And the Broons and Oor Wullie books and the Beano-Dandy retro book (and arguably the Dandy annual, since half the strips are deliberately retro characters by new artists) are aimed at the nostalgia/adult market, which isn't children at all.

Perhaps publishers are responding to the widespread concerns about the welfare of the older generation, especially in view of their reduced circumstances, and their sufferings when confined to a hospital bed, and are providing them with the intellectual challenge of some picture books. From a purely practical point of view, after they have laboured through to the last page, they will be able to burn them in their grates to keep warm. Perhaps all the books in the public libraries that are being closed down due to what passes for a policy where our current government is concerned, could be shared out among eligible pensioners for the same purpose. Get Granpaw Broon down to Kensal Rise to organise it all, I say.

It worked in reverse with me because at first glance I thought The Beano book had gone out of the chart as I couldn't see it.
