What comics did you buy today?

I just use the clock on the auction item which shows the seconds ticking away.

Yes, that clock is useful but only until you bid. From the point when you enter your maximum bid and click on Continue, right through to the point you Confirm your bid, you cannot see the eBay clock ticking away the seconds. It is because of this that I need to watch the sweep hand on my alarm clock. I enter my maximum bid with less than a minute of the auction remaining and then wait until five seconds from the end of the auction before clicking Confirm.

The 1916-17 volume of Chums. In contrast to the 1915-16 volume which I also have this one is very war-heavy, in fact one of the serials is set in the trenches. The 1915-16 one only has a few short complete war stories and most of the serials are set in either schools or older times (pirates, gold-rushes etc).

Picked up the Topper annual from 1962 earlier this week. Not the best condition, but clean, readable and intact. Still a bargain at £2.

Just "topped" this (excuse the pun), I got the 1960 Topper annual in better condition for an incredible £1. Table-top sales in church halls are definitely worth the 20p entrance fee!

BUMS. I saw signs for a charity book sale myself today, but was too lazy to go. I wonder what I might have found?

Anyway I got the Dan Dare book "Trip to Trouble", because it's in shops and more sales means more volumes! The last story I have chronologically, though, is "Marooned on Mercury", so I have some filling in to do

Picked up the new Dark Horse Presents anthology on Saturday - very nice package indeed 80 pages with great art from Neal Adams, Howard Chaykin, Paul Gulacy and Richard Corben amongst others so everything for a saddo 70s US fanboy like myself - other good stuff from Paul Chadwick (Concrete) and a Frank Millar article (nie cover and spot art) etc - imho this is the type of book Clint should have used as a template (ok Clint came first) not read it all yet but enjoyable and lovely to look at and for £5.99 a bit more than my usual (but the only book I bought this week) but for me was worth it due to the content.

Last Saturday, I visited The Old Childrens Bookshelf on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and, as often happens there, found stuff I wanted. So, I bought 6 issues of Cowboy Picture Library (3 x Buck Jones and 3 x Kit Carson) and a Schoolgirls' Own Library #161 - Masked Friend of the Riding Stables. I have part of this story in a couple of issues of Girls Crystal and now I can find out what happens. None of this is cheap but comparable to online prices from London. Also in the shop were Dandy's; Beano's; Girls Crystal (storypaper issues); Copies of Eagle, Rover, Beezer, piles of annuals and more. You'll need to save up for all the stuff you find there.
Last week I went to Banjaxx Comics in Stirling and bought Birds of Prey, Zatanna, Sherlock Holmes yr. 1 #3, Sigil #'s 1 & 2, Power Girl ('cos Zatanna was guest starring) and Green Hornet yr. 1. Hours of happy reading.

I used to follow the original DHP. Is this a reprint anthology or new work?

Recently picked up the Ranger Book for 1968. Nice book. Never been able to track down any of the comics at a reasonable price, though.

The New DHP is a regular all new book with new material - glossy paper and in full colour (were Corbens art is in grey tone) very nice package indeed.

Highway Patrol, published by Pearson. This is part of the TV Picture Story digest series with a Broderick Crawford photo cover. Story is The Disappearing Casino. I only have 3 others in the series;- Murder Bag (predecessor of No Hiding Place), Sword of Freedom, Dixon of Dock green. All have photo covers. The art is not of the same quality as the Fleetway Libraries but entertaining none the less. A nice addition to my collection.

The Usborne Book of Victorian Horror Stories: illustrated so it's kind of like a story paper, ahem. Plus the stories might have originally appeared in story papers, they're all pretty short.

Stories For Boys: Yer generic adventure story annual thing. A 1980 reprint of a book originally from the 60's, it looks just like it's from the 60's though, the same sort of vaguely-glossy paper dustjacket and cheaply-made paper.

This week, I struck four more issues of Sparky (Numbers 454, 455 467 and 469), plus a few replacement issues of Cheeky (two issues which have the mini comics intact 1/7/78 and 15/7/78)
