The first three issues of Action from February 1976 and, from a different eBay auction, the issue for August 14th 1976. In recent weeks I've also picked up a couple of dozen issues of Spellbound.

I told my mate Steve about the return of Steve Rogers and he said the worst example was when Norman Osborn returned - he said he gave up buying Spider-Man after that. But never mind the resurrection how have they explained Nick Fury's change of ethnicity? A lab accident?

The Ultimates line of comics takes place in an alternate universe. Nick Fury is still white in the standard Marvel universe.

As for why he's a black character in the new universe, no idea. The Wasp is Asian there too. I suppose they wanted a different mix. Many things are different in the Ultimate comics.

The likeness of the black Nick Fury was based on Samuel L. Jackson as he's a comics fan. Subsequently he was so pleased about it he accepted the part of Nick Fury in the Marvel movies. Art imitating life imitating art!

Maybe they made Ultimate Nick Fury black so that they could give the film role to Samuel without fans complaining that he was the wrong race!

Of course one of the earliest comic-strip characters to change nationality was Blackhawk who started out as Polish before they rewrote his origin to make him American.

If they ever make another Daredevil film, it will be a reboot (I'm not aware of any plans to do another one though). It wasn't that popular, although Jennifer Garner impressed enough that her character Elektra got her own film.

Received my copy of the hardcover Don Lawrence Westerns from Book Palace Books today. The book and printing and reproduction quality itself is up to BPB's usual high standards. BPB's shipping and service cannot be faulted either.

The book contains two complete strips, "Wells Fargo" and "Pony Express" drawn by Don Lawrence and written by Kelman D Frost. The art, it goes without saying, is gorgeous, and the writing is pretty standard for the era, ie; assumes the reader is reasonably intelligent and well-read.
The limited edition print of a Don Lawrence "saloon bar" painting is gorgeous, although rather small (I'd happily buy that picture at a good poster size).

But, I was surprised to find that in the title page, although the book is called "the Don Lawrence Westerns" the only actual credit on the title page is "edited by Stephen Holland". Steve does however provide a well-researched and absolutely fascinating 12 page history of both Wells Fargo and the Pony Express, although some maps would have been helpful since he is describing stage-coach routes...(sorry Steve, historical articles without maps are a pet hate of mine, even if I do have a degree in history).
Steve also provides the short half page biographies of Frost and of Lawrence in the back of the book.

Surprising too, was that nowhere in the book's editorial/foreword/back matter etc could I find any information on the original publication dates, and what comic the stories were originally published in or who by, except for two dates and the name 'Swift' in small bottom of page attributions to two pages of original art that have been published in the back section of the book.

Given that these stories haven't been seen for over 50 years, I'm a bit disappointed about the crediting, and the lack of any historical publishing background, especially since the other BPB books I have do give this kind of information.

Despite these quibbles, I'd still recommend the book to anyone who does have an interest in westerns, historical British comics and Don Lawrence art. I expect most readers of this site would know whether they are part of the target market for this book :-)

PS: I also bought BPB's "Wulf the Briton" which I have decided is probably the very last book I would ever part with: it is stunning. I find myself taking it down from the shelf every few days just to admire it...

Now waiting for Titan's Heros the Spartan to appear... :-)

Yes, I was especially surprised there was no mention of the comic ZIP, which originally featured 'Wells Fargo'. The historical stuff was fine, and Steve always writes well, but I would have preferred a bit more background information about the actual strips.

As I am away at the moment, I managed to scrape together some pennies for Phil-com's last auctions of Victors and got 11, 14 and 18. Not only those little gems, but I have also picked up a random box-load of Battle and 3 Victor Summer Specials from the early 1980's. Got a few months to go before I read them.

I won one of Phil Comics 1963 `Buster` comics- was out bid on another eight! I have always wanted to catch up on the `Maxwell Hawke` series that ran 1960-66.
A Face unclouded by thought.
