What comics did you buy today?

Picked up a Crisp box full of comics from a bootsale today for a fiver had a quick look a large number of early sixties dc and marvel some fair to poor the rest good to fine inc a few 80 page giants also some early mad mags, war library and a dozen 70s british marvels all in all a good result, plus two weeks ago picked up from a bootie two bread trays of asst pocket library comics for £40 range from 60s to 80s

Hi the earliest dc comics was a 1963 superman and the earliest marvel was a 1965 fantastic four , the rest of the dc comics mid 60s the marvels up to mid 70s the best of the bunch was a 80 page superman no 6. all the pocket library's I picked up a few weeks ago were cowboy, battle, war and commando issues

Today I bought three hundred consecutive issues of Tammy, starting at issue one, six summer specials and seven annuals.

The early issues are not in great condition. Some of them are damaged and close to falling apart, but they have all their pages and are all readable, so I'm happy.

Gosh! That's nearly halfway to a complete set in one swell foop: it certainly puts my pathetic collection of Tammys to shame (sadly I don't have a copy of the original number one, btw).

As far as being happy goes, however, wait until you've read a few consecutive episodes of the unrelenting horror that was ' Slaves of War Orphan Farm'!

Oh yes, that looks like a laugh a minute.

Of course tragedy was Tammy's stock in trade, and there really are no limits to the melodrama. Did any of the characters in boys' comics have quite so many hands turned against them and physical impairments when they tried to excel at sport?

Some characters certainly experienced their fair share of trial and tribulation - notably the orphan soccer-whiz 'Nipper'. More often than not, however, I felt that the boys' adventure comics relied more on straightforward power fantasies, like the execrable Captain Hurricane; and when the less inhibited style of the 1970s came into vogue I'd say that they tended to the opposite side of the S&M spectrum from the girls' titles (just look at Judge Dredd!). No doubt a psychologist could have a field day with all this!

finally, after nearly two years of not winning this, I won the 1980 Cheeky Holiday Special.

Now to get hold of a better copy of the 1981 Summer Special.

We had a break on the south coast and found Dave's Comics in Brighton where I bought a couple of issues of Adventure and some Gold Key - 3 Stooges; G8; Turok; and a nice Daredevil from 1948.
Also, from a friend who's selling off some of his collection, some Dell western titles incl. Gene Autry; Restless Gun; Johnny Mack Brown; Roy Rogers; Range Rider;ex Allen and a WDL version of Rex Allen. I'm always surprised that British comics can be so fragile and on newsprint but WDL titles had stiffer covers and thicker interior paper than their Dell originals. They were also in colour.
In a second hand shop I found Slick Fun Album from 1951? The origin of Super Stooge. Doesn't get much better.

Funnily enough I bought a WDL Lone Ranger Album from 1954 this afternoon. I didn't realize they were producing albums so early - yet this one is supposedly no.5! Lovely cover - I'll have to check whether it was original, or an American reprint like the contents. Not bad for £2 - which is also what I paid for their second Patrick Troughton Doctor Who Annual from another stall.

Right then...
The Beano, The Dandy, Beanomax, 2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine, Doctor Who Adventures, Pulp Detective and The People's Friend. I'll add them to Commando, Strip Magazine and Classics Illustrated (though that's only recoloured here) Edit: Oh, and The Phoenix and see if they are as thick as one issue of Monthly Boys' Magazine from Japan. They might juust make it, though they cost more than ten times as much!

About 200 Buntys from the 1970s and 1980s for £4 at a boot sale. They were stuffed into three carrier bags - one of which actually advertises Bunty itself (was that a free gift?). In a way I was kind of sad as they belonged to the lady selling them when she was a girl.

Went to the comic mart and bought almost a hundred original gag cartoons by Wallie Robertson from Phil Clark.

Scope charity shop put out some more annuals and comics. Bought the 1978 Sparky Book and issue 42 of Beano Superstars, Minnie the Minx in "Stormy Weather", which isn't on my list (which will be updated later).
