What comics did you buy today?

The Stallone film has an excuse - Hershey wasn't promoted until 1999, and that film was made in 1995. So she was his sidekick, which matches the comics of the time. Last year's film used Judge Anderson as the sidekick instead, and Hershey is only mentioned on a computer monitor. The Americans certainly wouldn't be familiar with her as a superior officer, unless they've been importing the UK comics.

Agreed and to be fair, the 1995 film was a reimagin of Dredd in any case down to the flying bikes, a different background history and Fargo still being Chief Judge - sorry Chief Justice. So changing the title of the head judge would hardly be noticeable.

The IDW version looks to be a more faithful reproduction of the lawman but even so they couldn't resist tweaking him. Don't get me wrong, this simply makes it clear that the IDW Dredd is a different character to Rebellion's which I don't mind at all. The way I see it is that IDW is giving us additional adventures of a Dredd from a parallel universe where things can be slightly different.

They do export 2000AD to America but I think Rebellion would bring IDW up to speed on the character, just like any publisher obtaining a licensed property. Hersey isn't Chief Judge in IDW's version because IIRC it's set at an earlier time than current 2000AD continuity. Simple as that.

They are mostly London issues but I'll have a look tonight. I know there are 55 issues for 1965 so probably two or three copies from the same week but different regions.

I really wish I knew how to scan photo's onto this site so you could see these `solicitations` I have incorporated them into my `Sparky File` 1965 chapter and free gifts section! I can send the photos as attatchment if anyone wishes to contact my E.mail at purple70883@yahoo.co.uk

The b side of the one `flier` states the dates of telly ads (13, 14, 21 & 28 Jan) but not details of time to be shown - just in Childrens peak viewing times. It also states that extensive advertising will be for second & third weeks"

States that 4 page inserts in Dandy & Beano (Pink Fliers) a Full colour leaflet in Bimbo, Large ads in Topper & Beezer, Full page ads in Hotspur, Victor, Hornet, Bunty, Judy, Red Letter, Family Star, Red Star Weekly, Secrets and Peoples Friend. Finally, half page ads in Sunday Post, Weekly News and Peoples journal.

So, Thomsons certainly put some effort into promoting Sparky!

Phoenix this dvd has 57 issues of the TV Times for 1967 so some duplicates. Only five are from the North. Mostly Midland, Anglia and London and one Border issue. I think I got this dvd from the comic fair as it has a £5 sticker on the sleeve and there is a dealer who sells dvds of vintage comic sets for a fiver.

I could have gone to London Comicon, but didn't feel like it...

I also could have gone to GEEK, up north somewhere, but didn't feel like it...

Because I'd got a free ticket to the (£1.50 entry anyway) Cambridge Book Fair! I got a 1976 Howard Baker reprint book (number 183 of 400, and signed by the man himself!) of the first 10 issues of Bullseye, from 1931. Bullseye is part-way between the older Amalgamated Press style and the newer DC Thomson style, it has several 'series' stories which are more or less complete in each issue, as well as more traditional serials with cliffhangers. Unlike the DCT papers it has covers printed in plain black, on dark blue paper.
The fair itself was awash with W.E. Johns, William and Chalet School stories, as well as several travel books (was going to get one about Japanese stories, but didn't) and other stuff. I also fancied a Russian children's book about China, which was going through the Cultural Revolution at the time. Actually I wish I had got that one now!
There was also two protests going on in Cambridge, the bus tried to 'race' one of them round the city so we wouldn't be held up twice, but they just beat us XD.

As someone who is as interested in WW2 as much as comics/cartoons, the book GILES AT WAR was a no-brainer---originally published in 1994, it was pretty expensive [17 quid at the time I think, too dear for me then---it's a more specialized affair than the usual GILES compendiums] : however, good quality copies can be picked up cheaply second-hand------three GILES books were put out in this series.




Stacks of highly visual gags abound, and quite surprizingly, the conservative DAILY EXPRESS greenlit a couple of fairly gruesome ----but thought-provoking-------cartoons that directly reflected the Genocide of the time.


Benito Moussolini gets a real ribbing in this collection.
