Re: new Jim Petrie page?
Biffo the bear was a bit like Rupert the bear...very human...almost a human with a bear head on..
Korky was much more cat like..
though the early Biffos were more bear like..before he evolved..
Mickey the monkey was also more monkey like in the early days as well..
don't know if these posts need to be moved to talking about DC Thomson cover stars..could be a good topic on its own..

Tin Can Tommy wrote: I really think alot of the time Korky can be just used in any situation seeing as the guy was on about Korky having no consistent characterisation in the new strips it is true for the old strips apart from the occassional ones you talk about where he does cat things like battle mice and being a smart cookie pretty much every comic character is like that sometimes but in other strips i bet he wasnt like that at all more of a clumsy oaf or maybe that was Biffo.
A few full stops would have been nice there, Tin Can!
Korky was generally what I said - being a smart cookie who uses his ingenuity to overturn situations isn't really a trait of pretty much every character. Barney bulldog, for example, Sparky's cover star, was more one of life's victims, whose attempts to take control of things or assert authority usually went wrong, with him ending up the butt of the gag in the last panel.
Granted, they're not characters of Dostoyevskian depths; their main purpose was to provide a good, eye-catching visual gag for the front cover. The new Korky, though, seems more a hook for the writer to hang his random thoughts of the week on. I think the look is fine, but that the simple style of the art ultimately works against strong visual storytelling; the characters tend to be quite static, often just standing and talking, or sitting and talking for several panels.
I agree that Ginger was fairly bland; I thought Ginger as the cover star possibly gave Beezer a bit of a bland feel by association, which wasn't really fair as it had a few of Thomson's best strips inside.

Re: new Jim Petrie page?
Personally i think the reason for the 'bland' cover stars is because in new comics if you have a strongly characterised character on the front its a bit of a risk, he may end up unpopular whereas with 'bland' characters they not usually unpopular just not people's favourite strip. As well as this when a less bland strip gets popular they can put it on the cover because they already know people will like it.
Also this cover star discussion probably as Peter Gray suggested deserves its own thread. Discussion of DC Thomson cover stars duzzn't really have anything t'do with a new Jim Petrie page.

Yep, I'm with this too. Like others, the celebrity aspect was a bit of a turn-off for me at first, but I've grown to really like the strip and its rapid-fire jokes and storytelling. (Even if it does occasionally fall over when trying to be up to the minute - last week's strip, along with the rest of the comic, was full of references to Murdoch's shaving foam pie! Not exactly Drop the Dead Donkey, eh?)dishes wrote:I'm right with you there. I hate celebrity culture and I don't watch TV but the thing about the Harry Hill strip, going on the episodes I've read, is that many of the jokes are (gasp) actually funny!big bad bri wrote:i thought i was the only one here who liked harry hills strip as most seem to slate it even though it is current with the celebs and the art is fantastic
But I don't think anything will persuade me to like Little Celebs or the new covers, or for that matter the two pages recently given over to celebrities every week either...

Why could you not just have said, Can I refer Swirly to the post directly above his...? By using the expression visually challenged gentleman, you are yet again insulting Swirly. Can you not see this, Scoobie?Scoobie wrote:I refer the visually challenged gentleman to the post directly above his...

Scooby, you've got to stop behaving like a troll on this board. I know most forums descend into aggressive cock swinging contests eventually, but we're trying to keep this one good natured and informative.Scoobie wrote:Is the thread title about DC Thomson cover stars, Tommy?Tin Can Tommy wrote:his post wasnt really about DC Thomson cover stars though, was it?
Speaking personally, I'm getting fed up of clicking threads and finding one of your deliberately antagonistic posts...

I didn't enter the competition, but I think 'Curse of the Were-Rarebit' would be a good name for a Fatty Fudge film parody!
