What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
I missed out on Bobo Bunny number one on eBay. Being the first comic I ever had regularly, it did have sentimental value if I had won it. Never mind.
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-), Fantastic Four (2025-).

I won't be buying Action no. 1 or 2 with free gift from Phil's auctions. On both, I bid £100 and was left wanting. Bullet #1 and 2 with free gift is also available and have both exceeded £100. I bought Bullet 1 from Phil's Auctions over a year ago with free gift and baulk at the ongoing price as of now, nearly double the value that I paid.

You could always buy Action No.1 (without gift) for £29.99.geoff42 wrote:I won't be buying Action no. 1 or 2 with free gift from Phil's auctions. On both, I bid £100 and was left wanting. If that's sold by the time you see this I'm sure other copies of No.1 will turn up. Just because a few people have the income to spend over £100 on a comic doesn't set it at that value permanently.
Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
Well, Geoff, I discovered tonight that bidding on items in Phil Shrimpton's auctions can be a chastening experience. Before tonight I have usually won the items that I've bid for, including on eBay and those on Malcolm Phillips's Compal auctions. Not tonight though. Admittedly I did win the first Bunty/Judy Summer Special from 1974, but after that it was all downhill. I bid on every one of the Judy and Bunty Free Gifts, and not with peanuts either, but I was outbid on every single one of them. I went down to the kitchen to lick my wounds, but made a cup of coffee instead. Later, having recovered somewhat thanks to the caffeine, I remembered that tomorrow is the auction for the flyer for the first issue of Judy, so I thought I'd just size up the other bidders. Would you Adam 'n Eve it? Mon-ell is one of them!! I might as well go to bed early tomorrow. Where on earth do all these high rollers get their money from? Not from a teacher's pension, that's for sure!!geoff42 wrote:I won't be buying Action no. 1 or 2 with free gift from Phil's auctions. On both, I bid £100 and was left wanting. it's not funny, phoenix!
I bid on a certain item and then so does someone else and the familiar name comes up in competition who is prepared to pay what ever to win... I do sometimes play games though, max the bounder to a silly amount, especially when he commits two simultaneous bids.... serves him right for doing so, I say.
Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
Something similar was going through my head when I forced the buyer to pay more than £50 for each of the last two free gifts. The danger, of course, is that I might have ended up winning at those prices, and whichever way I look at it a standard free gift is never worth £50, especially when there are six of them one after the other. My assessment of the situation at the time, and bear in mind that you only have about a minute and a half to make your decision on how much to bid because Phil's auction items are only two minutes apart, was that he had probably bid £100+ in advance on every item, but when an individual auction started his bid was only showing as £1.50 or some such.geoff42 wrote:I do sometimes play games though, max the bounder to a silly amount, especially when he commits two simultaneous bids.... serves him right for doing so, I say.
Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
So it is ok for you to put in a not peanuts bid on all six of phil's girls gifts but only if you win,if someone else wins it is a bad thing ?
If you win do you care about the bidders you out-bid ?
These bidders are collectors the same as you and because they want it more than you they are greedy bad people why ?
And bidding people up is very childish how would you like it if you thought someone was doing it to you and cost you a lot of money.
Play nice.

Yes, that's how I see it.Hen Broon wrote:So it is ok for you to put in a not peanuts bid on all six of phil's girls gifts but only if you win,if someone else wins it is a bad thing ?
Of course not. Why would I? Would you?Hen Broon wrote:If you win do you care about the bidders you out-bid ?
Nowhere did I say they were greedy, bad people. I was merely lamenting that they had more money than I have.Hen Broon wrote:These bidders are collectors the same as you and because they want it more than you they are greedy bad people why ?
I wouldn't. I had already implied that anyway in my previous post.Hen Broon wrote:And bidding people up is very childish how would you like it if you thought someone was doing it to you and cost you a lot of money.
I'll think about it.Hen Broon wrote:Play nice.

I tend to agree with 'Hen Broon' on this one. Bidding high just to make the winner pay more seems a bit spiteful. The only real winner in that situation is the seller.

Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
That rather depends on which way you look at it. My bids were too low because the winner had already bid higher. He didn't need to adjust his bid upwards, so he was inviting challenges from anybody who also wanted the item. That's just how eBay works. And bear in mind that if the winner had on those last two occasions only bid £45, the chances are I would have won both. There was no way I could know in advance of bidding. Oh, and why is Hen Broon not having a go at Geoff42 as well? After all, my post was responding to his, in which he said much the same thing as I did.Lew Stringer wrote:I tend to agree with 'Hen Broon' on this one. I just go for my max bid. If I get the lot, fine. If I don't, then there is always next time.
Each bidding strategy has its' merits and demerits. And I just go for what works for me.

Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
"How eBay works" is that each bidder bids the maximum they feel something is worth to them. Not overbid just to force the price up. You admitted the item wasn't worth the amount to you that you bid, and that you only did it to "force" the other person to pay more. Geoff admits to doing the same. Perhaps others do too, so none of you can really complain about the high prices items go for on eBay when you're partly responsible for shoving those prices up. It also sounds like shill bidding, which is against eBay's rules by the way.Phoenix wrote:That rather depends on which way you look at it. Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
I was convinced that with mon-ell having bid already on the flyer for the first issue of Judy, I would be wasting my time bidding tonight. I'm very pleased I changed my mind because I won it. I then added to the money that was left over from my bid, and went on to win the free gift from the first issue of Spellbound. Perhaps I should have risked a bit more yesterday as the bidder who won all the free gifts then had a maximum of £61 today, not the £100 I'd imagined he was bidding. I didn't bid on, or buy, anything else.
Re: What comics DIDN'T you buy today?
I notice no one is paying attention to Phoenix's question of why Hen Broon isn't having a go at Geoff42 as well.
Gosh, what have I just written? There really is a 1st. time for everything.
