Phoenix wrote:Well Raven, it certainly isn't the 1962 Cape because that was a hardback with larger format pages. So it must be the 1968 Puffin. Just because my copy is the 21st reprinting, the covers of which the company decided to change in 1989 to advertise the Zenith film, it doesn't mean that my claim is in any way undermined.

Okay, Phoenix - you try selling your copy sight unseen as a 1968 Puffin on Ebay, and see how pleased the chap who gets your 1989 printing is!

Oh, but it does: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Pedantize

Ped´ant`ize
v. i. 1. To play the pedant; to use pedantic expressions.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.

... if I may be pedantic.

Whenever I sell any item on eBay, I always give scrupulously accurate descriptions and deceive nobody.

Wow, we have dredged something up! I'm almost encouraged to take my spade and dig down as far as I can in my back garden, as I should soon strike Roman treasure trove or some such. However, I'm put off by the fact that the word is not in my copy of The New Oxford Dictionary Of English, my bible in these matters, and the fact that you have only managed to come up with a reference that is nearly a century old and in an American dictionary to boot! Come on, Raven, we do things differently over here. Find me a reference in any dictionary of English published anywhere since World War II, even in America if you must, and I will be more receptive.

Of course you may. Be my guest.

SHUT IT! (Best Regan voice). Squabbling aside has anyone seen the film?

It sounds like a movie about Derek Dougan and mates pursuing Holly from Dancing on Ice.

So you only accept words or phrases coined after 1945? This is a case of ageism that dwarfs even the Miriam O' Reilly Countryfile affair. It was there in Webster's and, speaking of Webster, I'll accept your apology in the form of a complete set of Shiver and Shake.

I answered that I had a few posts back and made a few comments on it. You'll find lots of reviews on the imdb too. I think it was on Film4 not too long ago, so may well turn up again soon.

As a link between Derek Dougan and fiction, I have a novel he wrote in 1974 called The Footballer. It was first published by Allison and Busby Ltd. My copy is the Mayflower paperback from the following year. Curiously, there is no mention of this publication on his Wikipedia entry or, for that matter, anywhere else on line that I have consulted.

Regrettably, I'm not too flush with issues of Shiver and Shake just at the moment, Raven. I was under the impression that I did have at least one, but it seems I was mistaken. Sorry. :D

It was mentioned in his obituary in The Guardian.
Dougan always had ambitions that went beyond football, and with the help of a loyal lieutenant he produced various books about the game, including a novel, The Footballer (1974), much of which appeared to recount his feud with the Wolves manager, Bill McGarry.

By the way, I updated his Wikipedia entry, so it now mentions the book.

Thanks Digi, that's helpful. I did read the obituary in The Independent but no reference to a Guardian obituary was flagged up when I searched for The Footballer by Derek Dougan.

I searched for "Derek Dougan" "The Footballer". Without the quotes, it ignores The, and since he is a footballer, the book wasn't prioritised in your search results.

Here's the Doog in a TV Times photo shoot from around 1970. Now we know why its called Clobber. If you went out like that today that's what people would do to you.

As we have established that you are on your own, Raven, in your quest for a complete run of this title, you may be interested to learn that issue 1 has just sold on eBay for £31. You'd better start saving up!! :D

And you, Phoenix, need to start educating yourself in the ways of Horrornation Street, Riddle-Me-Ray, Scream Inn and Blunder Puss. it's never too late to begin your Shiver and Shake collection.

I should have issue one; I bought it with enormous enthusiasm as a little 'un. ( I do have a fair few issues here, too.)

Guru, I've not encountered Lucky Charm either and I like Catch the Cat. Something else to chase.
Tonibunny, there was another character who used suction pads to climb and I only discovered him this week when a friend loaned me some issues of The New Adventure from1931 and this suited and masked hero is Zero the Silent. The first illo. shows him climbig a brick wall with pads on knees and hands. Sorry this isn't about girls comics but at least it is sort of connected. I'm thinking that I have a cover somewhere of Waldo climbing up a sheer wall with a coffin on his back but I have a feeling he's using bare hands.
One of the reasons that I collect some girls comics and the libraries is because I'm a fan of hooded/masked heroes and of course I love Phantom Circle, Silent Three, Gray Ghosts and the Hooded Protector from Nelson Lee.

This is the cover of issue 485, paw broon, which was dated Feb. 14 1931. This was the first issue of The New Adventure, which was a colourful rebranding and smartening up of Adventure, which after just over nine years of life had become a very tired-looking paper. Three other serials started the same week, one of which, The Black Cossack, became about as popular as Zero The Silent. The last issue to be called The New Adventure was 574 (Oct. 29 1932), and the following week it reverted to Adventure.
