will there be any more dandy/beano reprints from aurum press

I wonder if there will be any more facsimile annuals from the aurum press ? The beano book 1941would be nice as portfolio editions did the 1940 one a few years back a good effort but no dedication page for some strange reason. Or what about the dandy monster comic 1940 that would be more likely to continue on from the 1939 edition anybody know if any more are in the pipeline?

I hoped there was going to be a new one each year [in chronical order], but it doesn't seem to have materialized....they were brilliantly done, but quite expensive, I would have bought them otherwise....

There was supposed to be the first Beano book the year following the Dandy one, wasn't there, but it seemed to drop from the release schedule. I wonder if the 'racism controversy' over some of the material in the previous year's Dandy facsimilie had anything to do with it.

Actually, I'd have preferred it if they hadn't necessarily gone in chronological order but just reprinted one of the best annuals each year from different eras, and indeed different titles. One of those late '50s sideways Topper ones, one of the best early '60s Beano annuals and so on. Just some of the most distinctive annuals.

The ones i would like to be reprinted are the uber rare dandy monster comic 1941 the dandy monster comic 1942 and 44 the beano books 41,42,and the super rare magic-beano book 1944 but in all honesty i cant see it happening but you never know...

I agree with raven if they reprinted the beano book 1940 i think a certain character would kick up a rarther large stink a lot more than smarty grandpa but when portfolio editions released it back in 2004 not even a whisper of complaint but then again it was mail order only and not on general sale.

these reprinted annuals were in slipcases, and being quite expensive, were likely aimed at the more serious comics enthusiast, who would take into account the different culture that produced some of the 'offensive' content......

I also collect vintage animated cartoons on DVD, and some have definate racial stereotypes from the 30s and 40s, but I still watch and enjoy them, and recognize them as items from another era.

Unfortunately, big bookshops were stocking them in the children's sections alongside regular annuals and other modern day children's releases.

What the publishers should have done was shrinkwrap them with a label - or just have a disclaimer on the box front (an easily removable sticker, or simply printed on the back?) - that the facsimilie is aimed at the adult collector and contains racial stereotypes from the time, then nobody should have a problem; the same way the vintage Looney Tunes and Disney Treasures releases have a disclaimer, then it's put into context and people don't accidentally grab one for their six year old without thinking about the content.

THAT'S a fair point, RAVEN, and possibly why this [very worthy] series seems to be temporarily postponed: I have just ordered [from the US] pristine DVDS of 30s 'POPEYE' animated cartoons [which I have been waiting a lifetime to obtain]------these will be chockablock with all sorts of questionable humour, but I still rate these amongst the most entertaining cartoons made anywhere.....

-----the WAR years of these will eventually be covered, and I can just imagine some of the JAPANESE stereotypes contained.....I don't think these should be withdrawn, however, they are a valuable record of the mindset that existed in this point in history.

With the excellent Disney Treasures releases, the DVDs have a 'From the Vault' section with, for example, wartime cartoons which contain the stereotypes you mention, and host Leonard Maltin giving a little preamble to put them in historical perspective.

The adult collectors don't really need this preamble, and I'm sure Maltin knows it - we even get a warning for cartoons that may contain something as light as Pluto wearing a western movie-style 'Indian' headdress - but it's the difference between these cartoons ever seeing the light of day again or not, so it's definitely worth it.

Equally, the realistic way to go forward with the annual reprints should just be to clearly mark that they're for adults and reflect their time - and make sure bookshops are aware that they're not for little kids when displaying them. I don't think anyone would want the original material to be censored.

Incidentally, ISPYSHHHGUY, though I'm collecting the Fantagraphics volumes of Popeye newspaper strips, I haven't ordered the R1 DVD cartoon sets (yet) as they're so expensive that I'm hoping they'll get a UK release in time, like the recent Woody Woodpecker and Friends volume one set (which contains some great Tex Avery material) did.

The early Popeye cartoons can be bought from iTunes for a reasonable £1.89 for three episodes. (Even includes the Betty Boop cartoon that Popeye made his screen debut in.)
The entire 1933-1938 run of cartoons can be bought for £19.99. Activate your iTunes software, go to tv programmes, and search for Popeye.

Ok, you have to watch them on your computer or iPod but it's a cheap compromise to buying imported DVDs.

Thanks for letting me know. It's definitely the complete DVD sets I'd be wanting though - I like the entire packages. The bonus documentaries (like 'The Evolution of Animation: The History of the Fleischer Studios') and featurettes and commentaries, etc. are a big part of the appeal for me.

Happy to wait though, as there's already so much DVD material to get through. I still haven't properly started on last Christmas's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit set yet - to name but one.

I actually asked JERRY BECK [on his excellent 'CARTOON BREW' animation site] directly when the 'POPEYE' shorts will be released on our DVD system....my post was accepted , but later deleted by him, suggesting he had no knowledge on this question..

---the first 'POPEYE' 4-DISC SET contains the first 60 cartoons, and by all accounts is crystal-clear, but has sold relatively poorly, due to what some people regard as a high price [currently around 25 quid], so future releases are split into 2-disc sets [VOL2 is out already] at half the price..........I personally think this price ain't bad, as these discs will be played many times, standing up to much repeated viewing.

TEX AVERY'S excellent work has failed to surface in full [at least in proper 'restored' form]......even in his native US, in this, his centenery year....however, a 2-disc 'DROOPY' import set is available, containing many gems, at around 10 quid.

I intend getting the DISNEY war years DVD set [which will contain much anti-NAZI propaganda] which is still available at a decent price.
