There was also a Viz "Billy The Fish" record which infamously sold one copy.

I remember DJ Martin Kelner playing this on his late-night show, and desperately wanting a copy, even though I was too young to buy Viz. By the time I was old enough (read: found a shop willing to sell it to me at 16) they'd stopped selling it. Bet it goes for a fair bit on Ebay.

I read something on the 26 Pigs website about The Damned having a song about Melody Lee, the character from Bunty (Melody Lee, A Dancer She'll Be was the story's title!). I think they may have also had a song about the Four Marys. Apparently Captain Sensible was a bit of a Bunty fan.

There is indeed such a song, on their great Machine Gun Etiquette LP. To quote the good Captain Sensible himself, taken from the 26 Pigs Bunty site:

"I remember some of the stories well, of course the 'Four Marys' and 'Bella' - but the one I liked best was 'Melody Lee - a dancer she'll be!'... so much so that The Damned recorded a song of that name which is still one of our fan's favourites live. In fact we are going to play it on our UK tour which starts in a few days (dates and other info always here www.myspace.com/thecaptainsensible)

When this character was dropped, myself and a ragbag collection of punks demonstrated outside Thompsons in Fleet St. and later attended a Sid Vicious show in Camden. We walked into his dressing room with the banners and as we propped them up in the corner of the room Nancy Spungen (who he allegedly killed later on in their drug addled relationship) took a look at them and remarked 'Who is Melody Lee Sid?'.

Once again I found this irresistible as the subject matter for a song and there, on my A+M album 'Women and Captains First' amongst my hits 'Happy Talk' and 'Wot' is the song 'Who is Melody Lee Sid?'.

What a great comic Bunty was....

The rock band W.A.S.P. did a cover of The Who's The Real Me, with a cover drawn by one of the Viz artists. The Spin Doctor's did a song called Jimmy Olsen's Blues, & their album was A Pocketful of Kryptonite. Black Lace & Laurie Anderson both did songs called Superman. Obviously, Prince did Batdance. Simon & Garfunkel used to be known as Tom & Jerry. Ash did a song called Kung Fu, which amongst others, mentions Mr Miyagi, the X-Men, Jackie Chan, & Scooby Doo (although not all of those started off as comic characters, most of them have have had comics based on them).
