Does anyone have any early New yorkers...are the cartoons like Punch...any good..

What famous cartoonsits worked for the magazine..

there is a CDROM of all the issues which you can have..
Now if this was Punch I wouldn't hesitate But what was the New Yorker cartoons like?

I think James Thurber did cartoons for the New Yorker. There was a tv series around 1969 where actor William Windom played Thurber. Looking forward to it one day coming out on dvd.

Get the CD rom with confidence, Peter, the New Yorker cartoons are well worth seeing. The most famous cartoonists were Charles Addams (of Addams family fame), and James Thurber, who said: "There is no exception to the rule that all rules have an exception". You've gotta love a guy who thinks that way!
Of course unlike Punch, the New Yorker is still being published.

at least 1500 cartoons of CHARLES ADDAMS (Adams Family) in the New Yorker..1935 to 1988.

found this on ebay..do you think it would work on my dvd recorder player and view on telly..it is region 0.

My dvd player on my computer doesn't work after I lost everything in a crash....though it could be possible to get back..

Possibly, but possibly not! (Sorry to be unhelpful!) I have several of these sort of things and generally DVD roms are simply a way of fitting more information on a disc than a CD rom can acommodate, and I think you will need a computer, with the capability of viewing DVD roms. However, if anyone has this New Yorker set and CAN watch it on TV, let us know! I saw this book/disc set at The London Bookshop in Bloomsbury just before Christmas, they had a stack of about 20 of them at £20 a piece. I went back two days later and they'd sold out! (Quite rightly, it looks like a great item!)

gpt my dvd player working on my computer..just needed the back up disc loaded on to it.must have missed it when I rebooted it after it completley crashed..

found out this is what you need to do..

NOTE IF YOU ARE IN THE UK - you will have to change your PC date settings to either MM/DD/YY or YY/MM/DD format to be able to view the dvd's.

not sure how to do this........is it on control panel you just change the time to american time..

so getting closer to purchasing it..

I've bought it on ebay roughly £26 from America..

if you are installing and trying to run it on the computer with locale settings other than USA (russian in my case), it refuses to work and dies with GetDayOfNNY error trying to parse date formatted in country's local format. switching to USA locale (start -> settings -> control panel -> regional and language options -> english (united states)) fixes the problem. just imagine doing this juggling each time you want to read!

windows xp, .net 1.1 (and tried 2.0 as well), current on all patches, fully licensed and legal copy

so just bey changing region on computer it should work..

I've finally got my dvd rom today........so many cartoons to see..also old drawn adverts..
Enjoying Addams work..
amazing how many magazine...pages you can get on 8 discs..

They have started putting the Viz on DVDs but there are only 183 of them to put on DVD and there only doing 25 or so on each disc so you would have to collect around 140+ Beano dvds, Id be happy to wait until Blu Ray sorts itself out so you can get more for your money, if they do in fact do it!

I agree with you though Peter they should make the archives available perhaps release them for download were you have to pay for them like itunes or something?

Maybe all this releasing of archives will become common when things like the Sony Reader catch on fully. The Japanese have been carrying similar technology around to read comics for years.
