Couldn't agree with you more ISPYSHHHGUY! As succinct a summing up as could be. One tip I got years ago from a colleague has helped me immensely and I forgot to mention it in my original reply. That is, to think in pictures, to visualise as strongly as possible what you want things to look like and what would have the highest visual impact. It is, as closely as I can describe it, like running a sequence of animation in your mind. It is a particularly useful method for fast-paced action-based stories and has helped me on more occasions than I can count - perhaps it will also be useful to you and others!

song lyrics I find is a good source of cartoon inspiration, Jock. By altering key words that most people recognize from popular songs, this can yield good stuff for comic gags.

One aspect of modern gag-writing I feel is overdone is 'self-referential' material, where the characters are aware they are pen-and-ink creations, and keep pointing this out to the reader.....while this has great novelty value, I try and use this sparingly . If it forms the basis for a strip, it quickly becomes tiring, I find.......
