Where on earth have all the original UK comics gone? Is there nothing apart from The Beano and The Dandy for kids? Everything nowadays seems to merely be a thin advertising pamphlet for a cartoon show and/or toy. Or am I just being old and misty eyed (big 40 coming up next month) in remembering the massive selection I had my pick of in the 70s? Did they just not sell or is it just laziness on the part of publishers? I don't expect exact copies of old titles but it all seems so weak now. What's my 8 month old son got to look forward to when he's old enough to enjoy comics? Wil

Yeah its been a slow and sad decline in UK original titles I'm afraid. There are only about 4 really "traditional" UK comics (that I'm aware of ) out there now - The Beano, Dandy (tho' rumour is thats on the way out) Commando and 2000AD. Most of the old titles aren't even published as Annuals like they once were to keep the title name alive - However ther are a lot of comics like Striker, Lucky Comic Bag , and the Warner Bros (and Marvel reprints - with some original stuff ie Dr Who) still out there. I suppose the audience for these type of books arent there anymore but still I think kids would pick up relevant comics if someone could publish somethign for them heck even an all ages adventure comic surely

I put this list together in June 2003 of the Britsh Comics I could find at the time. Thats a lot of titles I had no idea there were so many - although lots of those look like reprints of US material (or comics with at least a fair amount of reprints) still Earl pretty immpresive maybe the comics aren't in as bad a state as we all think - still a big lack of originated UK material and characters to me but theres hope there - there seems to be a gap in basic adventure there a la Valliant type books to me.

There is a current boom in the small press though. Can't get hold of them too easily at the current time (although there's a selection at the Superhero Store - http://www.superherostore.co.uk and Smallzone wwww.smallzone.co.uk).
Expect to see great comics like Martin Eden's O Men and Grant Springford's Pest Control in the High Street in the next few years. Talent like that can't remain underground forever.
As for me, I edit and write for an anthology called Starscape, which aims to bring the same sense of anticipation as Mighty World of Marvel or 2000AD. The printing isn't as good as many of the larger comics but just wait. We have writers from DC Thomson, Marvel and 2000AD, as well as indie creators working on strips plus we've also got the Leopard from Lime Street being reprinted.
There's good stuff out there, it's just underground at the moment. But I'm guessing by the time your son's old enough to spend his pennies, euros or galactic groats, there will be a new British comics scene.

Also keep an eye on the makers of Striker, I thing we may see a couple of new titles including an adventure weekly from Peter Nash & co using the new 3D computer art seen in Striker. P.S Chris got your first issue of Starscape today, many thanks very impressed keep up the good work.
