More free replicas!

Alas, you will have to move to Northern Ireland, or possibly Dublin...

Think they'll ship those papers and comics to England? :(

And I hope Morris Heggie got misquoted:
“The Dandy started in 1937 and the Beano in 1939,” says Morris.
Should be 1938 of course, the shortlived Magic launched in 1939.
EDIT: And this paragraph is total bulls**t:
We started off with a bumper 96-page comic in which we used a collection of pre-printed strips that had appeared in issues throughout the year.
The Beano and Dandy annuals have never used the reprint format. Some characters in those early annuals never even appeared in the weekly comics.

Language TIMOTHY!

Surely this forum should remain kid friendly.
Unless of course kids are not allowed to play here? I thought it was a comics forum after all. Even if kids can't take part let's keep it clean.

This kind of talk just reminds me how much I cringe when people use such language in the street or in any public space for that matter.

RESPECT THE FORUM! Please?

The New Oxford Dictionary Of English describes 'bulls**t' as vulgar slang. Crucially, however, it does not call it offensive. Language is an ever-changing entity, howbeit slowly. The word 'bullshit' is currently a generally acceptable synonym for 'nonsense', although for the time being people may choose not to use it in occasional situations such as during a school parents' evening or when addressing a vicar. But if they do, I doubt whether the teacher or the vicar will be particularly upset, let alone cringe. Get real.

The point clearly made was whether such language should be used on a forum where children might see it. No one mentioned teachers or vicars.

As children's comics are predominantly discussed here it's a fair chance that kids might happen upon this forum. You might not think such language is offensive on the internet but I imagine you'd be one of the first to complain if that word turned up in Dandy Xtreme.

If there was problem with me using that word, it should've been caught by the swear filter.

Timothy? My name's James!

Oh come on, Lew, read my post properly. The point I'm clearly making is that the word is no longer particularly offensive to anybody, whether on the internet or anywhere else. Of course children look at this forum, indeed we have at least one member in ConorB for example. As for Dandy Xtreme, all I know about it is what I have read on this forum. Frankly I am considerably less troubled by the language used in it than I am by the apparent need of critics to accuse the editorial staff of pandering to schoolchildren by using vocabulary that they think children nowadays find acceptable in their daily lives, thus making the company seem 'on the ball', 'at the cutting edge' etc. In my opinion the company would appear, perhaps inadvertently, to have hit the bullseye with this decision, so if they were to use more words that children actually use, such as 'bulls**t', they would be being more honest, and I doubt whether very many children would even notice, let alone complain. I would notice it but there's no way I would complain, not only because I'm not offended by it, but because I oppose such attempts at censorship where none is needed, as should you if you are the good socialist you seem to be.

Said it before, will say it again... if you have a problem with someone's post, pm me, Alan or Colin. Otherwise stick to discussing comics.

I don't understand your point, Andy. I have no problem with Lew's post and we are both having an ongoing discussion about comics on a forum that encourages us to do that.

Actually I think Andy thought you had a problem with my post, not Lew's, because I used "bulls**t". I guess all I can do is apologise. :sorry:
