Re: What comics did you buy today?
Last Saturday, in The Works in Lincoln, I bought Football's Comic Book Heroes by Adam Riches for a story paper-enthusiast friend that I was staying with. It cost me the princely sum of £4.99. There were several left. The bonus, for those of you who feel up to rushing straight over there tomorrow morning, is that the shop is situated near the bottom of that criminal steep hill that goes up towards the Cathedral. You'll be barely breathing heavily, as opposed to the gasping-for-breath period when, having negotiated the first part of the hill, you reach the appropriately-named Readers Rest bookshop, at which point you have to wait to go in until your eyes have stopped wobbling.

The Harlequinn Bookshop further up is better. Last time i was in there (over a year ago mind you) they had a heap of Girl's Crystal annuals from the 50's and 60's.
I went back to Lincoln recently for something, but i went on a wednesday, when they are closed! I'd been looking forward to it for about 2 weeks

The Works in Glasgow (Sauchiehall St branch) has "Roy of the Rovers" Annual (No2 - the recent reprint ones) - £2.99, a "Best of Roy of the Rovers" from the '70s (108 page?) £4.99, "Whatever Happened to Superman" (hardback DC comics) £4.99 and a "Best Crime Stories" book ( small size lots of pages including some great Alex Toth work) for £2.99 - Didn't buy any as I'm trying to get rid of some comics rather than add to them, but good buys for anyone interested in those books.

Today i got issues 1, 5 and 10 of The Halfpenny Marvel, from Australia! Issue 1 has a stamp on it from an "Old Boys' Bookshop" in London, so it's been all the way around the world!

The Very Best Of Black Bob has just arrived from Amazon. I must admit that it is a far chunkier volume than I had expected. I look forward to reading what appears to be a comprehensive survey, nicely topped off with Ray Moore's thorough index and stripography. Excellent value for money.

Picked up an 1972 Mandy Annual today for £1.50. One of those "Didn't expect to find anything in this shop" buys. Good nick and still got its' dust cover.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I struck a collection of Dandy's from 1965, including the issue that was on sale the week I was born.
and if memory serves me right, the Dandy went on sale Tuesdays around this time, so it went on sale on the day I was born (Number 1213 released 16/2/65, dated 20/2/65)

£205 the lot. I left a lot behind as I had run out of cash but he'll be at future fairs. I went over to the comic fair (where news had already reached Phil Clarke of my purchases over the road) and told my mate Steve. We both went back to the Ephemera fair and he went through the box as well and coming away with a nice selection. Unlike myself he has checklists so went through the box slowly checking each item against it.
Here are a couple of covers from these acquisitions:

From Ken Graham I picked up Chums issues 416, 427, 428, 429 and 431 - 436 all from 1900 plus seven issues of Illustrated Chips from 1905 & 1908. And TV Comic 451 dated 6/8/60

Dare of D Divsion an ancestor of Dan?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
For a period of five weeks in 1924 Thomsons got their numbering of The Vanguard all wrong. The issue you picked up, Steve, should have been 23 not 26. They are numbered correctly as far as 21 (Mar. 1 1924), but the issue for March 8 was numbered 25. As this error was not immediately picked up, the following four weeks were numbered 26, 27, 28 and 29. When it was spotted, the decision was taken to give the issue for April 12 the number 27, which would have been its correct number if no mistake had been made earlier. The numbering then continued normally, but this of course meant that there were two issues numbered 27, two numbered 28 and two numbered 29. Numbers 22, 23 and 24 do not therefore exist.stevezodiac wrote:The Vanguard (DC Thomson) 26 15/3/24
Re: What comics did you buy today?
The Vanguard and The Surprise covers are especially evocative. I wasn't aware of these titles. Do their contents live up to their covers?

If so, perhaps he was a professional footballer in 1925 before deciding to go off and kill people in 1932.felneymike wrote:Dare of D Divsion an ancestor of Dan?
