Dandy Artist Info Request
I was just wondering if somebody knows which artist used to draw The Bully Beef & Chips and The Jocks & the Geordies strips in the 70's and 80's?
Thanks, Guys.
Thanks, Guys.

That'll be J.C. Hughes, Jimmy.

DEJA VU! Steve was just after answering that for me a few weeks ago.
He also drew One Tun and Two Tun (Dandy Book 1972, where Charlie Grigg seemed to draw every other page and there were no less than four adventure strips) and Corporal Clott - and the episode Big Head and Thick Head in the Dandy reproduced with the 2006 World Cup edition was drawn by him as well. He also drew some episodes of Dirty Dick.

Thanks a lot, Andy and Steve!!
You are right, One Tun and Two Tun - I'd forgotten about them!
I don't even think I've heard of J. C. Hughes but his artwork was very unique. His strips used to fascinate me; I would find them a bit sinister somehow, but all the more appealing for it.

I recently bought the 1972 Dandy book (99p from Oxfam, Hazel Grove - seem to have a few annuals there, some other Oxfams charge around ?2.99 for an annual, even the last Dandy annual which went down to 99p after Christmas!). Some of it [the 1972 annual] (including that Winker Watson story) would not be acceptable these days.AndyB wrote:DEJA VU! Steve was just after answering that for me a few weeks ago.

Unacceptable in terms of what, David? I take it you mean political correctness rather than standards of artwork?David wrote:...Some of it [the 1972 annual] (including that Winker Watson story) would not be acceptable these days.

Yes, I mean political correctness, not the art work.Steve Bright wrote:Unacceptable in terms of what, David? I take it you mean political correctness rather than standards of artwork?David wrote:...Some of it [the 1972 annual] (including that Winker Watson story) would not be acceptable these days.

Wun Tun and Too Tun (sorry for the typo) would be seen as racist now, and the Black and White Minstrel Show would have been deleted.

Yeah,it did seem rather racist, but I wasn't born in the 70's.AndyB wrote:Wun Tun and Too Tun (sorry for the typo) would be seen as racist now, and the Black and White Minstrel Show would have been deleted.

No racism is intended, I don't think, and the strips are best appreciated forgetting about such things - ie not taking offence.

Here I am Guys 20 years late with a reply
is anyone still around?
Jimmy Hughes was my Uncle, he created and drew Bully Beef, Jocks and Geordies, Big Head and Thick Head, Wun Tun and Too Tun, created Just Jimmy but only drew a few, he drew some Dirty Dick and took over Corporal Clott from April 1971 after Davey Law passed away.
I have a large collection of his original artwork, but always on the lookout for more if anyone knows of any for sale?
